A second positive in my town. Everyone looking at everyone else like they just sprouted giant boils and dripping flesh. :(

Not sure why empty wal mart shelves would be a surprise at this point....,

The staff is doing everything they can to put on the shelves everything that comes in.
I am deeply grateful for each and every person in any kind of position where they have to be near the random public.

Normally when I'm in Walmart it looks like the workers are either sleep walking or on break. Now it looks like a fitness class with everyone running around and stocking shelves as fast as they can.

17 in Maine? Aw, man... I hope that church won't be canceled. I missed it on Sunday, so I really want to go this week -- especially because I've been finding it harder to focus when I'm praying. I think that missing Mass has jumbled me a tad.
Anyway, stay safe, everybody! I'll be praying for the sick, the dead and their families, and the still-healthy. Take care, everyone!
We just got notice that our services are cancelled for the next 8 weeks. That means no Holy Week and no formal Easter services! Our parish is looking into live-streaming audio-only services, for at least that week. We're a very old (300+ years) and very small parish, so the technology is all new for us.
Our Priest (Episcopalian) has uploaded Morning and Evening Prayer services for us. They run about ten minutes. I find it comforting to hear the familiar services in a familiar voice. If anyone's interested, I can share the link. Just pm me.
The other big disappointment is that our annual Garden Market is cancelled. It's the biggest event we do and the largest in our small town. It's also our traditional way of shaking off the Winter blahs. It's going to be a really strange Spring ... :(

Joe Rogan had an immunologist on his podcast a few days ago. It's worth checking out for people who want to separate fact from fiction. They also talk about other interesting diseases that have caused problems in the past and will cause problems in the future, with some discussion of deer-related diseases.

I think it was on that podcast that I heard most masks are useless. It's only a very specific kind of mask that would be effective, and you really shouldn't try to buy those because there are major shortages in hospitals and for healthcare workers.

I can't understand why people are crazy for toilet paper. My sister says people are stealing rolls from her office, so they are having to lock them up and only put out half a roll at a time :).

I won't have the money to get tested or to get treated if it comes to it. Neither do a lot of the people that I know. Unless they make the test AND treatment affordable for people with and without insurance, most people I know will not go to the hospital. This is true for all medical conditions, not just this crisis. Tens of thousands of people die every year because of a lack of access to affordable medical care. People can't afford to go to the doctor so they avoid it until it's too late. Medical care is a human right, and one that our country should be able to afford to offer. There is no excuse for the number of people who are dying or becoming homeless or bankrupt for medicine. Alas, I will heed your request to keep politics out of this conversation, and stop there.
Don't believe that should be considered politics, only decent humane thinking!!!!!!!!

They recently discovered a test that is fairly accurate. Cranking out 33+ million of them, takes time. There are over 33 million people so that's only 1 test per person. In addition, up until a couple days ago, the law was that only federal labs could confirm a positive case. Trump got the law changed, so that state labs can run the tests, and confirm cases.

One of the local news channels was talking about there being about 26 tests available at each of the hospitals (14), and County health care facilities (10). While that doesn't seem like a lot, that's 624, in our county alone. There are 67 counties in this state alone. 10 thousand test kits are a drop in the bucket. They are sending more in, on a regular basis, so that figure will increase at a good, steady pace. In the meantime, I can understand why they are limiting them to people that really need them vs people that are iffy, or don't really need them. It won't be much longer, and there will be adequate supplies of the tests.
