Thank you so much!!! This was so helpful!! And I think your friends article was actually the one I came across rather than the one @microchick mentioned. Whoops.

I thought he had a sprained or broken leg but now it is both legs and he can barely walk and can’t even seem to stand fully now. Also seems to use his wings to stabilize himself and his comb is darkening and some green poop. :(

He’s also not vaccinated so I think the probability he has it is pretty high. :(

I made a separate thread about it though with pictures and videos if you want to see him or maybe help confirm? :(

I’m mostly struggling with whether to put him down or not and also whether I even want to deal with hatching again and risk more dead birds and heartbreak. :(

I hatched him myself.
Dammit, not Red, That poor roo. I'm bummed out now, sad sad sad:hit:hit:hugs

I'm glad you are sending him in, @KDOGG331. I know how hard it is. I was lucky. My husband is a retired eye doctor. He was able to diagnose the ocular Marek's for me as it infects their eyes the same way ocular Herpes does. Marek's is a herpes infection in chickens afterall.

You are not going to know for sure unless you have a necropsy done. Or a vet can get a diagnosis for you.

Do you have a vet around you that deal with exotics such as chickens? He or she would be able to give you a tentative diagnosis while the bird is alive, put it down for you and send it off for testing.
Yeah, we actually do have an exotic animal vet not far from here. I was thinking of taking him in about his leg but wasn’t sure. Now that he’s worse, I think I would like to take him in and see what they think but then I didn’t want to risk anyone else’s animals if it is Marek’s so idk. I don’t want to mess up the sample though so having a vet do it would probably be best. Especially if they could also put him down for me.

God, I really love a good conspiracy theory! Really makes you think! Thank you

You are not taking into consideration anything positive. So maybe that makes this scenario kindof biased.

I would really be devastated if Jack comes down with it though. :( I also hatched him and Wilma so they are also unvaccinated. :( so far seem fine but I know it’s a risk.

If you hatched him he didn't bring it in. You have to think about your most recent additions. If there is ANY chance at all, at 8 weeks I gave a bunch of roos to a person who had no chickens. Well he called someone to pick up these chickens for processing. I felt really bad for this giant JG roo. So I took him back. At this point he spent birth to 6 weeks with me, then 4 months away from my flock. Than came back to me. He lived for 4 years , so as a 4 year old he became lame . When he couldn't eat, I had to give him the vodka cocktail to cull.

So I do believe that if your chicks are away from home for a number of months, then comes back, their immune system has had some time to deal with a small amt. of virus before coming back to my home . This is just something that happened once. I can't promise anything.
