Face mask are considered useful here if you are an asymptomatic carrier of the virus. With regard to preventing you catching the virus they are next to useless. The wearing of gloves is also mostly pointless. Using a sanitizer or proper washing of hands after shopping for example and of course, not touching your face is believed to work best.
I've seen quite a few people pull their masks down with gloved hands to use a mobile phone, put the phone back in their pockets and replace the mask.

I carry a small bottle of 96% alcohol and a face flannel which is soaked in the alcohol. I wipe my hands with the alcohol and flannel after leaving the shop and wash again with soap and water at the earliest opportunity. The alcohol and rag is also handy for wiping handles etc.
