Remember that if you are well educated, you know far more than any vet even an exotic one. The one vet I had dx'd my first one with EEE not even in mosquito season. So IMO, the vet can put him down nicely. If you want to know the truth keep the body refrigerated , then what I do is wrap them several times with small garbage bags. The body needs to be cold but not frozen. I add a lot of ice pacs (which I save over the years). In a styofoam cooler in a box, with the paperwork (I put a check in there for at least $50.00) Not for nothing I felt so much relief when I sent them out. Now I would know for sure. I send any deaths that don't have a why because I do it for the flock.

Good point. I’m sure they probably don’t see a ton of chickens. Just don’t know if I should send him to my state lab or somewhere else.

I wouldn't tell you stories Kdog or waste your money even though I know you like to waste money.
A vet can't do the testing...he would have to send it off to your state lab so bypass the vet fees.

Okay thanks!!! I’m not sure if he’s miserable or not because he’s still crowing and eating and stuff but he can barely move and mostly sits around all day so I’m sure he is not happy. and he is also getting worse.

Yeah, probably a better idea. But if they could test him while he’s alive then idk. But he’s probably in pain?

What's really awful to me is that chickens can be suffering symptoms yet have a "smile" on their face the whole time

No where else unless it's another state lab and only if it is cheaper than your state lab and they accept out of state birds.
California might.
