That is why many Canadians choose to come to America to get critical health care.

We had one such patient and they were more than a thousand miles from home. They were from Winnipeg.

How do you pay for it? I'm an American and I go to Mexico for dental. I will be going to Mexico for more serious medical treatment that I've been putting off if Bernie doesn't make it past the primaries.

I take moderate offense to the idea of citizens coming from other countries to take advantage of health care that more (probably many times more) than 80 million Americans cannot themselves afford.

EDIT: I'm glad for anyone who is being responsible and proactive about their health, and happy for any people from other countries that are able to get the healthcare they need here :). I'm just sad that so many of us can't afford it.

Well, for our family things have taken a sudden turn. My daughter and her partner have been exposed and each now has a mandatory week away from work. My daughter is prone to bronchitis which has turned to pneumonia more than a few times. Half an hour later, I learned that my niece and her 3 kids spent Wed-Fri with my brother and his wife. The youngest child, 4 yrs old, has started feeling bad and has a sudden fever as of this evening. From what I've read 5 days is about the time frame before symptoms appear. My brother and his wife are in 60s. Scared, no. A wee bit anxious, oh yeah.

Hang tough. They should get lots of sleep and drink lots of liquids.

For your daughter who has a vulnerable respiratory system both breathing steam and taking Mucinex (guaifenesin) help keep the mucous in my lungs liquid so that I can cough it up. She should start now before she gets into respiratory distress.

Thank you for the advice. ☺

Well those people have to pay cash. Their insurance doesn't cover treatment in the US unless they get special coverage, like for a trip.

Bingo! Give the girl with the golden hammer a prize!

Nothing is truly free. Somebody, somewhere is paying for it, either with hard earned cash or taxes.

Yay! I get a prize! Going shopping tomorrow. Going to try to get enough chicken feed for a month. And a few groceries.

I'd rather my taxes go to healthcare for literal millions of people who actually refuse to work (which is almost nobody in my experience) than go to a single war, large corporation, bank or stockbroker. :T We know medicaid for all isn't free. We also know that the current system is one of the worst and most expensive per capita in the modern world. No excuse for that but greed. My mom died from the current system. My partner makes enough money for us to live off of, but not enough to see a doctor. We currently have drive-through testing for corona if you have a doctors referral but I think I can count on one hand the number of people I know with a GP and the ability to see them for a referral. Half of them are all on medicaid, the other half live in the richest neighborhood in the city. :p

My sister with the RA and no immune system is one of them. And she gets MUCH better treatment on medicaid that she did with private insurance pushing papers for a lawfirm. Plus on medicaid she gets the choice of several different widely accepted and intensely competitive providers. She only had one option at the law firm. At this point she actually has to work LESS so she can keep her medical coverage and contribute to society and taxes less and take more. The moment she gets a "real" job she won't be able to afford her medication anymore. I know several people with serious conditions in her situation. Our economy is actually worse off for it. You pay for her medication AND she can't contribute BECAUSE there's no medicare for all. (You also pay for everyone else who needs emergency care through taxes, and everyone else who doesn't take care of themselves who buys insurance, and you're paying for every investment the insurance companies make and all of the insurance company salaries.)

Today Taco Bell announced they would be giving all their employees not only sick leave and reassessing their health and safety protocols nationally in regards to corona, but actually PAYING their employees during that sick leave, including paying their hours if a store is required to close temporarily. While I've seen lots of corporations say they were offering sick leave to employees and cleaning up more, this is the first major corporation I've seen that has also publicly committed to paying those people for the time they have to be away from work. Employees who are given "sick leave" but aren't paid for it will go into work sick to pay their bills and feed themselves and their families. Taco Bell has become one of the safest fast food locations to avoid corona in the nation as a result.
