I'm using the pattern supplied by the hospital asking for masks and my Mom is reading into a better filtering fabric for the interior as well.

My mother is the master seamstress, so I'm going to wait for her to tell me what is best for an interior filter but I'm using 1800 thread count tightly woven cotten sheets for the interior fabric. It will be softer and safer according to what I watched...who knows, maybe this is just to make us feel better but I feel like anything is better than nothing!

Quilting cottons are very densely woven -- batiks even more so. That's why they cost so much more than the JoAnn's stuff.

And one of those plans includes a pocket to insert non woven interfacing that can be replaced.

My mum's been making quilted masks out of flannel and cotton with elastic bands. We know that it's not as good as a commercial mask, but with the shortages we can't get those and it's better than nothing. She plans to give them out at church, but we might not get to if we don't go to church any more because of quarantines.

I've read and overheard various versions of "there are no reported cases here so I guess we're good for the moment" type comments.
What one reads in the media is tested and reported cases. If your area isn't testing then one has absolutely no idea how many are infected.
South Korea is on the ball with things like drive through testing and their figures are probably the most accurate currently available.
This is one of the problems with the UK figures, there have not been enough tested to make any realistic claims about the penetration of the virus.
