Some foods just taste bad to me, foods I know are "good" for me. All the cruciforms except steamed broccoli, I can eat that. But cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts ... awful stuff! And most root vegs like you are talking about, rutabagas, parsnips, BEETS... gag! I can do carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes. And winter squash, I can eat those all day long. Artichokes, yes; av[cadoes, yum! But those others, they burn my mouth. Just .... ick! Lol. Diff'rent strokes, I guess. 🙄

That happens to me with parsnips, sunchokes, wild foraged mushrooms and other wild edible plants. No one in my extended family but me will eat anything not found at Wallyworld. SAD

Parsnips are so good eaten with carrots. I don't particularly like them in stews (I'm not as keen on sweet & savory combos), but mashed, cut into fries, baked as chips, all good.

Sunchokes are super delicious, but it's hard to find them fresh. They're usually soft and sad at the grocery store. I don't like carrots and beets from the grocer either, they taste dry.

I've read that some people taste cruciferous veggies differently, so they're bitter and hard to eat. You might be in that category.

Avocado is probably my absolute least favorite fruit/veg... I can't get over that greasy, fatty texture. I really dislike zucchini too but I grow it and eat it anyhow (since it's so abundant in summer it's a shame not to eat it) as I've found some recipes that disguise the taste pretty well.

Sunchokes are maintenance free and can even be considered invasive. Just plant a few small ones when you find fresh, and harvest late fall thru early spring as needed. They are quite hardy perennials even when we have hard freezes.

Stick an onion, a potato, a yam, a carrot and a parsnip in a microwave veggie steamer bag 5 minutes, theres a good entree. Add seasonings and oil of choice. Sides optional as is very filling.

In the past few weeks I think I've read every English Queen (historic) and some non queens, just interesting people, all by Alison Weir. Also some kings as well. I have just started into French royalty.

Two years ago I was addicted to every book or movie having to do with WW11-Pacific. And the concentration camps and some good true escapes.

Funny how interests just kindof bounce around with no rhyme or reason.

I have to say that as a nation no other could have done finer in this crisis.Good leadership and great Americans. And we chicken people are so funny and entertaining. Certainly breaks up the boredom.

To those who needed guidance starting a garden; I started with a book called " Square Foot Gardening." Not for the square foot bed, but more about how to plant seeds successfully in easy langauge. The other thing it taught me was how to be successful with plants closer together, it had some good ideas that I still use today. I grew all my gardens up to 15 years ago in NY with the regular dirt and composted horse manure. The horse manure compost and turn black and smell like dirt. We called it "Black Gold". And I planted with that mix and plants loved it because it keeps the ground nice and fluffy. And I didn't walk on it.

In Florida I had no luck. My yard was total sand and I would have had to water plants several times a day because even with compost and mulch, the sand sucked all the water up
Lucky me now I live in Southern Indiana where that Kentucky grass grows so fast it can be a pain. But the ground is so hard that it becomes very slippery when wet . It's easier to just order garden mix and use raised beds.

Does anyone have some tips with planting and raising raspberry plants?

Good night!

Haha.... Can i send you some? I've been struggling to get my rasberries back under control inside my yard and just grow in the wild area beyond my bayckyard fence.
The canes grow fruit on new growth mid-year then if not cut off will be long enough to bow down til the tips touch the ground, where a new plant will form. They will send branches out when trimmed making more berries.

Sigh... Im glued to all the covid 19 updates. Still hear conflicting messages.
Don't wear masks unless you are sick.
You can shed virus when you don't know you're infected.
Stay 6 feet apart. The virus can travel up to 6 feet from a cough or sneeze.
The virus can stay in the air 2 to 3 hours and be viable before settling on a surface where it can live days.
So if you pass someone you just walked into that cloud. And it is stuck all over you.
So even if you are still 6 feet from the person you are now infected.
So just stay home.

It's not my rule ... It's BYC's .. and violating it makes a lot of people turn away. Again, there are places to discuss these things ... but not here! This is a place of consolation, comfort and support. Evangelizing politics belongs somewhere else entirely.
Wait, doesn't the room say corona virus, covid 19 virus discussion? I saw nothing in the description for this forum that said, comfort, consolation, support.

I'm so glad my little car runs on gas fumes and that I filled up in anticipation 2 weeks ago.

Mail- Usually I use my own shopping bags when I can, but keep a stash of typical grocery bags for use around the house... to line small waste baskets, cover shoes when painting, etc...
When I get the mail I put one over my hand, then turn everything to be inside the bag without touching it and once in the house it gets tossed to the floor (in an out of the way place) to wait for several days before I touch it again. Then I scrub my hands.
@SnapdragonQ I think you're overdoing it. If I remembered correctly this virus lives only a hour or so on paper and wood. And up to 3 hours on metals and and plastic.
Washing hands is only necessary if you touch surfaces shortly after a contaminated person touched it.
I wish you less fear. Please stay healthy in a more relaxed way.
