Boy I feel stupid![]()
On the diabetes thing ….. I suddenly "got" diabetes after a serious fall at work, over 10 years ago. Doctors aren't sure if they are related, but I believe they are, as NO ONE ELSE in my family has, or had diabetes ….. EVER !!! This is a topic for another time though .....
I was on insulin for awhile, but eventually said NO, I'm not gonna take these shots anymore ! Tried low carb, but that wasn't cuttin it, so I QUIT sugar cold turkey, and seriously restricted carbs, and did the keto thing for almost a full year. I stayed under 20 carbs per day, and many days less than that.
It was horrible, and it was the hardest thing I've ever done, I was a crabby a$$hole for quite some time, (still am !) BUT, I went from 265 pounds to 195 pounds, and went from size 46 pants to size 38 ! This transformation took me about a year.
More importantly, I went from insulin shots, and 3 oral diabetes meds a day, to ONE maintenance pill a day !!! My A1C is waaaayyyy down from the 8s, and 9s, to the 6s, my BP is down, and despite eating basically only meat, eggs, and cheese, my cholesterol is on a downward trend, which pleases my heart doctor to no end !
I feel better than I have in MANY years !!!
The only downside to this story is, I had to buy all new clothes !!!!
Diabetes is not to be trifled with, and the more you do NOW to prevent, or lessen it's effects, the better you will be in the long run.
Yes. The screener can only remove so much - we have one so I see all the pieces that CAN make it through and it’s more than I’d like, too. After the winter the soil settles and the finer particles rise to the top, your silts and your clays etc. A good forking will mix it all back in, if it’s too heavy mix in a bale (one of those big cubes) of peat moss, and you can’t go wrong with a couple 50lb bags of sharp sand too. Stay away from manures for now, that black soil has plenty of nutrients in it already you just need to get some better drainage
Colour varies by localeThanks! But the soil isn't black. It's a medium brown.
Btw here is the 60 Minutes video. I found it very interesting and informative although I’m not 100% sure I agree with every single thing they said or that sugar is the only problem. I’ll let people watch it first though (if they want) before I share my full opinion.
Also it’s a bit of an older video but still very interesting IMO.
@Beer can
A thin fragile one maybe but I thought what seminolewind was describing was a thick impenetrable crust. That sounded like clay to me.
Could you dig through your raised bed a bit and take a pic of the crossection, seminolewind? That would probably help us understand better.
