It is definitely insane!! Backyard chickens are so popular so they can raise the prices. It’s crazy. Although I haven’t seen any be $5! Usually like $4 for the ones I get but they users to be like 3! When I got mine I think they were like $3.25 and now $3.79, $3.99 etc! Even that’s crazy!! I imagine how from under $2 to $5 would be even more shocking!!!

You’re lucky you live close though and can save in shipping.
Dude I’d be thrilled to pay $5 a chick!
Here’s my bill for this year:
$7 each, unsexed, for brahmas
$2.61 each for cx pullets
$10.55 each unsexed bb turkey
+ $40 for their flight

Here check this out:

I should add too that there are no “pick and take” stores here, if you want something you can order starting in late feb/early March for May/June/September delivery. But I’d like to think that that helps discourage the panic buyers that would run into tsc and pick up chicks

Usually delivery goes well, if you only get a few chicks the hatchery throws in a few extras, and they all arrive on a scheduled flight. Though once a few years ago the pilots forgot to turn the heat on in the cargo hold and all the chicks died. The ladies at the feed store had to pick through the boxes of THOUSANDS of dead chicks, balling their eyes out, just to find the few lone survivors, they swore it was the last year for doing chicks but luckily changed their minds!

I needed some things at the feed store, first time I've been out in a while. They had lots of chicks and ducks. I don't think there's really a shortage or anything. Even if there was, 21 days later it would be solved :D :D

However, I see that lots of people want a piece of this. It's pretty unbelievable (actually it's sad) if you ask me. :(

I paid about $9 each for female welsh harlequin ducks and $6 for a drake. I ordered 7 birds and paid about $40 for shipping. My total was $96 and some change.
It was the only way I could get sexed ducks so I sucked it up and did it.
I got 3 sexed ducklings for the price of hatching 32 duck eggs for someone.

I vent sexed them myself. So far 2 out of 3 are quacking. Hoping my husband's quacks soon 😂 they're only 3 or 4 weeks old.
