The way I understand it she was unknowingly spreading it while working in peoples kitchens. Once it was traced down to her she was sent off to a hospital on an island and spent the rest of her life (30 some odd years) in isolation.

correction it was 23 years.

The way I heard it, once she was told she couldn't believe it, wouldn't take meds. So she kept getting jobs in contact with food and people. So they got frustrated and locked her up
