Hawks are incredibly smart. They will also hunt in pairs as a team. For example, one will appear to fly off. You relax and stop watching the babies. But the other was sitting in a nearby tree, waiting for just that opportunity, and now they swoop down and get one. (Didn't quite happen to me - almost! But I didn't relax my guard when the first one flew off.) Another day the hawk, who had been trying to catch my babies each day, stayed away. I stood by the babies for hours and there was no threat. At 4:00, I almost went to sit, leaving the babies on their own. Almost. At 4:15, the hawk came down the street incredibly low and fast, and was upon me in seconds. I was right there, so he did not get a baby. But almost...
