I can’t even imagine how loud they are! Haha that must’ve been awful! Guineas are really loud too. Heck, my chickens are very loud too sometimes and even my little budgies!! and right now my dad wants to strangle my bantam cockerel because he crows all the time and starts extremely early.

Here we have 'the quiet of the country'. Sandhill cranes, Canada geese. The train 1/2 mile away, likewise the freeway. Our roosters, and everyone's dogs. It's 'quiet', right?!

Hence the problem with 'colt', spoken by folks who should know better. It's a colt or filly, or if already gelded, a gelding.
Like calling all chickens 'roosters'?!

Welp. Labor day is over, uneventfully. Got some hot sauce canned. 6 half pints.
We had a HUGE storm with flash floods across the whole area. All I can do is hope it kept people in sufficiently to avoid a case spike from the holiday. Personally I loved listening to the rain and thunder, but did not love getting my shoes soaked walking through the yard. Tomorrow it will be hot again - perfect weather for the plants to keep growing.

I said I was going to watch the Kentucky Derby and my college educated daughter asked if it was a horse race with or without riders. Now how many horse races have you seen without riders??? Lord, these college kids might be book smart but have no common sense!

We are members of the MidWest Ox Drover's Ass'n, with members all over, and there's a website, with photos. There are more people (4H'rs) in the NE, and it's really a fun activity. I'm more about horses, and DH is the cattle guy here.

Actually.... *pushes up fake nerd glasses* The etymology of "man" is gender neutral. Originally it was "Werman" (male) "Wifman" (female) and "Man". Eventually "man" became the default for male AND the gender neutral but "woman" was still considered separate from the neutral.

Language is just weird like that.

Pushing up actual nerd glasses... I loved this exchange about etymology and gender! I teach literature (and sometimes animal studies) and really enjoyed the conversation this afternoon. Thanks, all!
