I think you've missed the point that Canada -- which is 3000 miles from coast to coast and has huge swaths of sparsely distributed population -- is able to do it.
But are their lower numbers because of tracking/tracing or better avoidance habits(masks and distancing)? Impossible to know for sure.

That's the POINT of contact tracing! When you know who's been infected you can alert them to isolate AND the prople they may have exposed BEFORE they expose dozens of other cases.

I mean, porque no los dos?

It can be from a variety of different things, and each one can contribute. I think that's the real point is that nothing is completely effective on it's own,. Even under the best of circumstances in an interaction where two people are masked and 6' apart there's a chance that someone will get sick. But that percentage keeps getting lower every time you add in another method of prevention, even if it's only partially effective.

Masks might handle the bulk of it but to be really successful you need to stay home, wash hands and contact trace whenever possible too. Plenty of places aren't even doing it on the limited scale of within a business, and if they were it could keep infection rates lower.

Because the numbers are exponential every infection you prevent matters. I think that's what we're seeing in Canada.

It's called the Swiss Cheese model.

No outings here either, unless feed pick-up in front of the feed store is considered an outing. :D
And again, I'm so sorry about your dad! I know how close you and your family are and it has got to be rough!! :hugs

Couple more days of "school" here then Christmas break, but we are being pressed to cement spring and fall plans and I'm going bonkers because as of yet there is no safe vaccine for kiddo. How in the world can we sign up for "must do" things when I don't even know when it will be safe again. And they (the pushers) are acting like come Jan...*magic wand and poof* things will be all normal again.
Um, no.

Did you ever get any bites on the covid tracking thing? Our local health department is so overwhelmed they announced weeks ago all tracing will stop. They can't keep up. A few local schools tried to remain on a hybrid after that and paid the price. All the area schools are distance again and look to remain so for the second half of the school year.
Yup - we're pretty much in the same boat, school-wise. The school Powers-That-Be are trying to stick with the State plan by announcing short extensions of totally-virtual schooling, but we all see the writing on the wall. We'll likely be putting in a full year ... and I felt sorry for LAST YEAR's seniors. This year's have it much harder!

Tracking and contact tracing just doesn't work.
It used to, but not so much, anymore, that's for sure!
And "Nope" - I didn't get any bites. By the time my name got out there, the rates were so overwhelming that there was no way to effectively track ... and no need. The main reason for tracking was to locate and quarantine those spreading the virus, especially the Typhoid Mary's out there. When everyone is exposed, there's no need to track - EVERYBODY is at risk!
Still, I'm glad I took the class. I understand the virus and the vectors a lot better, now ... and can shut down ... I mean, reassure ... my brother when he starts panic-mongering. He's a good man and means well, but if y'all remember the old SNL ... He's the poster child for the Debbie Downer skits!

Meanwhile, my hair is reaching a style I haven't had since college. One hair cut, by a friend, since February! Haven't had no bangs and longer locks for that long, and so far it's not too bad. By the time I put that face mask on, and dash through essential shopping, who cares?!
Taking pictures? Not!

I've given up. Having covid totally FRIED my hair. I don't have split ends, the entire shaft is frizzed. All those lovely curls are dry, wiry and constantly snarling together. Deep conditioning and oil treatments aren't helping. Tonight, I'll give it Gramma's old-world mayonnaise treatment. If that doesn't work, I may just go ahead and dye it blue or turquoise or hot pink or some other radical color, "just because." I've always wanted to do it, but never had the nerve. If it's all got to be cut off when this is over, I might as well give it a shot. We'll see if I actually get the cojones to do it!

I'm kinda loving working in my daytime PJs.
Separate, of course, from my nighttime PJs.
My sewing machine runs constantly, these days. Everyone is getting a year's seasons of Holiday Face Masks for Christmas. I have so much fleece and flannel (we all know that the one who dies with the most unfinished projects wins, right?) that I may make my Mom and sisters new "work attire," too ... aka sleep-pants!

If you're doing masks I've switch to this fitted pattern. It's easy to do, it comes in many sizes and they're comfortable to wear. You can make them in the fold-flat style that she illustrates in her video or align the diagonals on the inside and make a boxier version that stands away from the mouth.

I use 2 layers of quilting cottons and line the inside with a third fuzzy flannel layer for comfort.
