It's the coats/couch potatoeness that are the problem. We live in some dang cold weather and we're out in it for hours. XD We were worried about the aussie mix being too cold, but he could not care less.
Ohhhh okay!!! That makes sense! Hahah sorry, I wasn’t sure since I know some people think they’re super energetic. 😁 should have figured that wasn’t the issue with you having a herding breed though lol 🙈

For the cold, they actually make these really awesome insulated coats for greyhounds and those type dogs (and any dog actually but they do have greyhound ones) so that might be an option! 😁 You could just dress it up in its winter coat just like the humans LOL

And I’m sure if you are moving and wanting to go longer, they could too. ❤️ I think it’s like with most dogs where if you’re resting, fine, but they can keep up if you want to go longer.

But the cold and especially ice/snow might possibly be an issue but get him a coat 😂 or if you really think it’s not a good fit, there’s actually a few other similar looking dogs that have longer coats. 😊

And he seems like he has a long enough coat to be okay. 😊 one of my brothers dogs has an even shorter coat than him, it’s really quite short/skin tight but slightly longer than boxer type, and she’s fine and runs around, wrestles, hikes, etc. in snow LOL now granted she doesn’t particularly like it and prefers warm, sunny weather, but she will be out in it just fine 😂😁

I caved - have you noticed ? Last Friday we picked up a golden doodle - yeah, a mutt. What a sweetheart, but she is wearing me out.

I think anything that ends with "-doodle" is about guaranteed to melt your heart. At one point I seriously wanted a Bernadoodle but we've since decided that we're ready to give up on animals that may well outlive us. ::sigh::

Merry Christmas to all who will be celebrating it! All the happiness and hope that life affords to everyone who celebrates anything!

I get it. Dani died 19 months ago and we pretty much decided not to add another dog to our household. Somehow the house seemed empty so we started looking at rescues. Most had serious reasons they were up for adoption, and many of the agencies were flat out ridiculous in their demands. We couldn't find that older dog who through no fault of its own deserved another home. So we enlisted our daughter. She's worse than me about dogs and guarantees that Miss Maggie Mae will have a home if we predecease her. :love

I wouldn’t recommend that particular cross as many of them wind up with horrible, crippling structure because the poodle and Bernese body shapes and bone structure, etc. really are not compatible. You can wind up with a huge dog with tiny, frail bones and just other crippling, painful issues unfortunately. A lot of them are also neurotic messes. Sorry, don’t mean to scare you haha IF you were going to get one, I would recommend a Goldendoodle or Australian Labradoodle as those two have their own breed clubs and extremely high standards including extensive health testing requirements (more than a lot of purebreds) in order for breeders to be accepted into the club and many have been breeding for decades and are into multigenerational dogs now instead of first gen crosses. With most of the newer crosses, people are still just throwing dogs together or they just really are not compatible, but with those two there are a lot of reputable ones now since they have been around so long.

Thanks, KDOGG, but we're clear that it's time for us to go pet-less.

We lost our last cat earlier in the month. Our lab mix is 14 and probably not for this world much longer. Of course, in our 70s, neither my husband nor I is either so we're sad about the decision but unambiguous. Chickens will do us from this point on.

I'm laughing, sourland, as one of my very close friends was in the same spot. Only she agreed to foster a very neurotic and skittish pup (no idea what her previous life on the street in San Francisco had been like) until an owner was found. Of course an owner was found. HER! ...but not us.

But I will make the mental note about the Bernadoodle. The one I met who started that flame burning was a lovely stable peaceful dog but she was still young. Perhaps those issues would have become more apparent. Who knows? But we put that idea away more than a year ago.

Awww I’m sorry about your cats and senior dog! :hugs

And there definitely are stable ones out there! Sorry, didn’t mean to imply there weren’t. :hide I’m sure there’s decent breeders for them but it’s just kind of a crap shoot you know?Just like even AKC purebreds can be neurotic or horrible structure too! 😂😁 it all depends. I am sure there are good dogs but I’ve seen a lot with bad hip and joint problems unfortunately because Bernese already have a lot of those issues and then combined with a dainty breed like a poodle 😭 I’m sure the neurotic stuff is less common but sometimes happens. Think it’s probably worse with Aussie Doodle, Border Doodle, Shepadoodle, Maladoodle etc. 😂🙈

Greyhounds are most definitely couch potatoes ... until they get outside. Most rescues won't adopt them out unless you have a fenced yard, especially if they're off-track or from any training facility, They're trained to run hell-bent-for-leather at the first glimpse of a fast moving, furry object. That includes wild rabbits (or loose meat rabbits,) squirrels, small dogs, cats, you name it. They don't stop until the critter either goes to ground (or tree) or they catch it. By then, they're often so far away they don't know how to get back. Beagles are the same way, but with scent. Luckily, I don't have that issue, as we have a fenced yard. Thank Heavens for that ... without it, Crazy Dog would have been LONG gone!

Hmm that’s true! Forgot to mention that before lol you said it way better! They’re definitely couch potatoes inside but they’re not unable to keep up outdoors and I think they can hike but idk.
