About 20 minutes to go, so I won't stay on long. It's a weird NY all the way around, not just because of 2020. It's also the first time I won't have both of my kids with me at midnight. DS is home, but DD is working. With both tonight's and tomorrow's parties cancelled, she just couldn't pass up the NY tips. I can't blame her ... but it feels like the end of an era. I'm gonna make a lousy empty nester ... even with all of my critters!
Happy New Year, Y'All!

Ha..I'm the latest of most here I guess. Still waiting... about 7 minutes to go! HAPPY NEW YEAR! This photo was taken a few years back. My husband hasn't been diagnosed with Alzheimer's yet. Love you guys and gals on BYC.

Ahhh hah, a fan of David Bowie & LOTR it would seem, eh? :pop
Happy New Year folks!

Ahaha, yep. Although Kellie's name was the best I could work out of "West Bay's Tequila Sunrise." I got to pick her name and her sire was "GC Jack Daniels" - don't remember the kennel, and dam was IIRC, "Jill's Licensed to Thrill". The cocktail theme seemed logical. Major Tom was actually a stray and there was a semi-feral mackeral tabby around at the time he showed up that we called Sergeant Stripes - again a theme. The boys, Mithril and Narsil were CFA pedigreed Maine Coons born 2005, so right around the time of the LOTR movies, yeah. Although I read the original Tolkien books not long after I "discovered" SF and Fantasy back in the early/mid 70's. I've re-read LOTR many times. About time for another go I think.

It is necessary to reread LOTR occasionally, very true. And rewatch the long versions of the movies, so terrific! My only complaint about the Jackson movies is that story lines are left out so that more time is spent showing impossible stunt battle scenes. Anyone else agree?

Yep, the movies stunk......all gratuitous special effects.
Have read the Hobbit and LOTR multiple times back in the day.
Tried to reread before movies came out and could not focus.

Hard to say. The sub-plot that most of the literary fans seem annoyed about its deletion was cutting the Tom Bombadil episode. But something had to be cut or the thing would've been 40 hours long. Minimum. And probably pretty boring, truth be told, although personally I can watch pointy-eared elves all day :-) . It had to appeal to the sizeable audience that would never have read the books as well, at the end of the day the thing has to make some sort of a profit.

I agree, to a point. Leaving out Tom Bombadil was unfortunate, but didn't interfere with the story. I guess that the battle scenes were too long for me, not being a teenaged male?!?
DH and DS had no problems with the battle scenes being long. Is it a guy thing? Or a Jackson thing? I'm overthinking it...
