I think it is because it is much easier on an island. Anyone going is tested and must quarantine in a hotel for 12 days.
14 days. ...have a daughter and son in law living there for a year..and their young son. Husband is in the Navy.

I can see that island living presents lots of delays but doesn't it also keep you more insulated from the virus? As I understand it, HI is the nearly-Covid-free place to be, no?
Mail has always been slower than the mainland and is part of the trade off but the last 3+ years it has been ridiculous. Packages being late and lost are more normal now to the point I don't even like to purchase online if I can help it. So, if I can't get it on island it has the potential of being sucky. My favorite place to shop is craigslist and Home Depot but for chicken and horse stuff like meds it is sad.
As far as covid goes, Hawaii has been pretty good- well, compared to the mainland yeah, but I consider what is happening on the mainland to be batcrazy. Really. We have a few undesirable transplants who act up but there aren't enough of them to really worry about and you can basically point and say "Hey look... a fish!" (dumb butts look even if you are pointing at the sky) Kauai's opted out of the pre testing and went back to a quarantine of 14 days post travel for tourists and residents alike after our #'s tripled in 4 weeks of opening up. With 14 day quarantine our #'s quickly went back down. Now we are to open up tourist bubbles. Not happy about that. Would like us to not rely on tourism as it is far more harm than good, plus it is awesome with out them. The island is healing.
*** I add that we only have 9 ICU beds and 15 ventilators for our population. Our Pacific Islanders are especially vulnerable. I just saw my Hawaiian neighbor friend (I barely recognized her) yesterday and she told me she recently lost her son to Covid. He worked for united. Poor gal, she is a sweetie.
