Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Yeah I watched that episode too.

I am not as addicted to animal planet as I was, but it is still interesting. There are too many stupid shows on there now IMO.

Too bad he couldn't have found the deer. You did say you wanted to get one!

I was thinking you meant chicken hen at first!! I only have 2 females and 1 male of the pharoahs, is that enough?

Heck, I might get some eggs from the swap, idk. I was asked what I wanted, jumbo, pharoah, button or duck, but didn't get back to her in time!

(Don't tell!) Oh well, as long as I don't get jumbos! I already have 3 different types, so idk about a 4th!!

The only all white quail that I know of is the A&M. There was a site that I saw one that looked like the A&M, but I don't remember what it was called. Besides, A&M's are the only whites you have right?

I'd like to know what he's been smoking, and if he has any to share!

LMAO!!!

well A & Ms comein pure white and some also have some brown on the back of their head but other than that they're solid white.
smile.png
There is supposedly another type of white, but IMO it's the same thing as the A & M from what i've talked about with other breeders...just as the manchurian is the same thing as the italian golden speckled, or golden, or just like the tibetan is also known as the british range...least that's my theory on the A & M

I totally agree!!! I HATE PETSTAR...and even though i watch animal cops...I HATE how they treat some of the animals they capture.....like cats...they chase them around and noose them and someone notes that they're "not hurting the animal that it keeps them safe" BS....let me hang THEM bya noose while i hang them over a creepy hollow box AFTER chasing them around and see how they squirm in pain...garrh! LOL! Then they say "all cats were sadly put to sleep because they were feral" Im sorry....atleast one of my three cats would high tail it out of the room if a stranger walked in coming towards them...she'd poof up her tail and be utterly terrified, and if they grabbed her int he manner i see them on the show grab the cats..s.hed' freak out claw and bite too, so then "op! she's wild" noose time! .....my cat would nto only fight she'd pee herself too i can almost bet...and im sure at the shelter she'd act wild...just makes me mad...cats dont act like dogs....so for them to expect all cats to calmly say "hello strange people" and be friendly while someones stalking them just gets on my nerves lol.

I also hate how they kill roos from a fighting thing on almost all cases...some they realize they can rehome them but most kill them...makes me mad...same with pitbulls but most prob wouldnt agree with me on that.

I ALLLSO hate how they add noises in....(but i also hate that on movies)....like a horse...the horse is hit by something (shot or somethign) and it screams out in pain....horses dont scream out in pain.....i can almost bet that any horses they used to get the sounds they used were at a stud house...as thats the only place I normallyhear the noises that they use to try and make people think that's how horses sound...stallions scream, esp if around a mare....not when they get shot...lol.....most they'd do is groan (which is sad)...

I have various animal pet peeves from tv things...lol! I mostly watch the exlporer channel
big_smile.png
and discovery i grew up watching discovery way better than AP

as for 2 hens to 1 male..that's way better than 1 hen per one male
smile.png
. It'd be better if you had two more though just to avoid the maleh urting the two hens he'll continually breed during breeding season, but I say as long as he's not ripping them up and making them bleed thenI personally dont see a problem. I've been able to avoid having a low ratio, but people who can't avoid it, (and if i couldnt avoid it) i'd just let them together and make sure the hens dont get hurt. At the breeders house..it was disgusting how many hens were dead, or dying from the males....nothing the breeder could do either (and that was in large colonies..her problem was her male and female ratio was really off...like 30 males to like 10 hens)...but i helped her learn how tos ex breeding males so i thnk she's got it good now
smile.png

oh and btw, only have A & Ms, i wont get that other type of white because of my serious belief that they're the same thing...so many people name their birds all different things that's one thing i was discussing with teh breeder..she got conned into so many birds because she thought she was buying several different colors then they hatch and ...wait a min! Her italian speckleds look exactly like her goldens and so on lol! She just emailed me theother day asking me if the breeder she's been thinking about ordering colors from was right/or lieing to her...luckily they werent it was about tibes and tuxes...the breeder was right
big_smile.png
LOL!

I could do that too, like my tibes, I could for fun call them "cocos" and i bet people would buy them thinking they're a new type.
smile.png
It's so easy to con people that i have a hard time trusting breeders until i do my research on genetics and history of the quails...but that's becaus eim a nerd...
big_smile.png
LOL!

There was one site that I saw those others on that had the A&M's and whatever the others were called. But they did say they were smaller, so maybe they just sellectively bred the smaller A&M's to get them? Who knows!
I used to watch animal cops a lot, but they are all reruns. I have seen every episode they show at least twice, but probably more than that! I also hate the 'it's me or the dog' show. That one is soo silly. It's like supernanny for dogs! I mean come on people, if you let your dog do that, then they will be mean, annoying, messy, nasty, whatever! A good pop with a newspaper will break most dogs of anything if caught young enough, IMO!!
And I agree about the cat thing. I had 2 when I lived in FL, one of them was a dog in a past life, I swear. He would greet everybody, and had to be the center of attention. The other one would hide, who knows where, and wouldn't not come out until whoever was there had left. Never did figure out where she was hiding! And it was not all that big of a place!
I do understand the thing with pits though, except for ones that aren't suspected of fighting. I wouldn't want to have an actual fighting pit, but a pet one would be great!! I try to educate people on them all the time. They are great dogs, but like any other dog, they need training. A 40-50# dog is strong anyway, but a 40-50#(which is how big they are supposed to be!) pit is a bull!! They are way stronger than other dogs! But they are very sweet if they are raised properly, and they must have good breeding as well.
I don't get the rooster thing either. I have one OEG roo who is a big sissy, but most game roos will fight regardless of whether or not they have been used to fight.
I hope I will be able to find another hen or two before spring! I don't want my male hurting my females! Might put the A&M's in there if they are girls. I wouldn't care if they were mixed, and doubt anyone around here would either. Idk though, cause I'm supposed to get some more, if he still has them when I get some $$. Maybe I'll just make sure they have plenty of room, and good hiding places!
I wonder if they make wooden or fake quail eggs? I'd bet if the eggs were left in there the hens would set them. I think a friend of my dad's has a lathe (sp?) maybe he could make some for me. Am thinking about getting him to make me some chicken eggs, as mine don't like laying in an empty nest! Silly birds!
As for the horses, I have never heard one scream in pain, but I imagine they could. I had also never heard one fart, but my dad's horse initiated me on that one! I thought it was my dad at first, until the horse did it again! and acted like he was so proud!! Kicking up his heels and prancing all around the pasture!

Did you get all your quail eggs yet? I candled my A&M's last night, and there were 2 that were kinda dark, so now I'm hopeful that i might get some chicks out of it after all.

i agree aggressive pit bulls shold be PTS to avoid the risk of them fighting again or hurting someone but the part that upsets me is ones that are obviously friendly but in areas that the laws are to put them to sleep makes me so sad. I grew up around a few pit bulls along with other dogs, great great wonderful family pets is all i can say. I've never owned one, my mom did adopt a mix, and we were told she was great with cats...yeah if you're meaning of greatis wanting to kill them...so my mom brought her back to the adoption agency a few days later after we knew for sure it wasnt going to work and they were so rude to her...well maybe they need to do better checks on their dogs (no matter the breed or mix) before they adopt tehm out saying they're good with cats...the cat that she tried to eat loved dogs and wanted to see her but the pitty mix wanted to eat her it was just a bad situation..she also knew how to open doors and we assume that's how she ended up in the shelter in the first place (escaped lol).

I totally agree with you on the gamey roo thing...my RIR bantam would kick the crap out of another roo smoe roos no matter what the breed dont like other males around...it's normal IMO...so putting them down is just cruel to me...atleast some could find a hoem with a bird fancier!
sad.png

As for horses screaming in pain, honestly they don't...i've ben around horses getting gelded, being stung by bees, whipped, etc...they don't scream, the most they do is groan. Even horses being slaughtered dont scream.
sad.png
Even if you watch horses with broken legs on race tracks, they don't make a sound...i think it's thier natural way to protect themselves from other predators ganging up on them.

Ah ha i just found proof to backup the not screaming in pain info " In one respect, it's a pity that a horse is not like a pig. When hurt or even when only mildly upset, a pig will let out an ear piercing protest that is impossible to ignore. Unfortunately, horses don't scream. They suffer in silence and mostly without retaliating. It is only by reading their body language that the suffering can be seen. But if we haven't learnt their language we remain unaware. "

Screaming
in horses is normally a sign of anger or dominanc not pain.

and herse info on that: "The Scream
The scream sounds like a loud roar of rage. It is very rare to hear a domesticated horse scream. It is only used during a fight between two horses, usually only in the wild.

"I will kill you" - The horse roars at another horse, moving towards the other horse aggresively, striking out and/or biting.
Responses:
"The fight is on!" - Both horses move towards eachother aggressively, striking, kicking and biting. This continues until one of the two horses backs down.
"You are the boss" or "You win" - The horse backs down, with his tail set low, running away from the other horse's threat. "

i got that from: http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:UhLXGuszMvgJ:www.equusite.com/articles/behavior/behaviorSounds.shtml+horses+fighting+scream&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=6&gl=us

As
for farting...haha...horses fart all the time they're hogs lol! Esp if you brush around their rumps, i notice most fart then...disgusting rotton hay smell is all i can say... LOL! I thnk its' sort of like how dogs smell other dogs butts, if a horse gets near another horses butt and they're new aquaintances if they dont fight, and are friendly they'll fart for eachother...gross i know but it's true lol!!

I've owned over 8 horses in my life time, seen them abused (not mine) seen them get hurt, gelded, fight etc...no screaming only in fighting, or a horsey dispute.
smile.png

I had to feed the quailies is why i ran away, then i sat down and watched em for a bit....oh and before that I put a stew in the slowcooker!
big_smile.png
