Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Thanks for sharing all of this great info! I purchased three female Coturnix Quails on Craigslist and now I'm wondering if they all truly are female. I watched your videos and read through the material you've posted here. Now I'm leaning towards saying they're all hens. All of them seem to have that rust color though and one has so few spots that I'm wondering if they really "count" ;). I've attached a couple of pictures. What do you think? None of them has laid any eggs since I got them 4 days ago. I've kept them inside in a well lit and warm room, keeping the lights on into the night for a bit to extend their day hours. I've been feeding them and turkey and game high protein laying feed recommended by my local feed store. If they're hens shouldn't they be laying soon? Also, is there any way to tell if these are "Jumbo" Coturnix vs the Pharoah size, or is that just a name given to the larger birds of the same species? Thanks and Merry Christmas!

thanks for all the great info, one question though from my chicken raising experience.
instead of using a medicated feed for chickens i read that a little apple cider vinegar in the water would take care of all medication needs (i believe it was 2 tablespoons per gallon) i used it on my chickens with much success has anyone ever heard of this and do you think that it would work for quail. i am completely new to quail and know there are always good points to medicate and to not to, this may be a good alternative to meds.

thoughts???

My first quails hatched today! I have 10 thus far and they aren't even due until tomorrow. Should I take the chicks out now or wait until tomorrow? They are running around like crazy, knocking over the unhatched eggs.

Adult females have speckles on their breast area, males do not, those look like females especially if they are older laying eggs already.

I raised bobwhite quail as a kid and loved them. The new coturnix quail are new to me so the information in the "information and pictures galore" was great. thanks I am rapidly getting my feet wet with mexican speckled, bobwhites, chukars, browns and tibetans. I appreciate all the information that was in your article.

There are some great pictures of quails in this thread! There's just too much reading to catch up on. lol. I was wondering. How many ounces of food do you normally feed 1 quail? I have 10 of them and I just want to get a good feed amount to give them. Thanks
