Ive just hatched what was supposed to be Red Headed quail - theyve come out assorted like itallians and japs - not a red head in site as the seller said there should be at hatch :-(

I'd like to say to the person who claimed that red-head is the same as Italian, that this is wrong. While it is true that they are both colour mutations of coturnix, they have completely different markings. This can be clearly seen when the two mutations are compared side by side. Red-head are a new mutation that has appeared in German and the Germans distinguish clearly between the red-head and the Italian.

I am thinking of the Italian males with their red to beige head so my appologies. As we don't have standards and people calling the birds incorrectly it's hard to help. I have most of the basic info on my website with photos. There is about 20+ varieties within the Coturnix in terms of color, and no one has all of them because many are in laboratories or such lethal genes.

ETA: Monarch was a newbie with quail and this is just the basics...there are many people far advanced and can help y'all more than this silly sticky with incorrect info.

Hi Quail Lady - I didn't intend to upset anyone, but was simply trying to clarify the misunderstanding. I'll be more than happy to send you pictures of my red-headed coturnix so you can see them for yourself. I too confused red-heads with Italians when I first saw them, but they are really completely different. My friend in Germany who specialises in colour mutations of coturnix also has, amongst others, silvers, blacks and some really pretty birds with a cream ground to the feather with a cinnamon lacing.
