Coturnix quail gender and other questions Plz help I don’t know what I am doing

Hi I just got 4 quail I was told I had a male and female of each color.




1. What colors do I have

2. Which are male and female

3. Is there anything I can do for their housing to improve it

4. Anything else I need to know

Females have speckled breasts and Male have plain breasts.

I’m not sure what is advisable for the US as I’m in the UK and I don’t vaccinate any of my birds.

@TwoCrows maybe able offer some advice as she is in the US Plus she is a star

Do they need a place to dust bath if they do what kind of container can I use fireplace ashes.

I use dirt & play sand for mine to dust bath in. Ash should also be ok as long as it’s not too dusty for them. You could use a kitty litter tray.

I added sticks and a dust bath that is 2/3 sand and 1/3 fireplace ashes

You feed them game bird feed. Oyster shell for the hens, free choice. I have never heard of anyone vaccinating quail.

Coturnix should be kept in groups of 1 male to 5 females, too many males will fight and pick on the females. They're very predator-vulnerable, as well, make sure nothing can get to them.
They need shelters to hide in, and you should make sure they always have food and water available. If you can provide it, they'll do better with more space. That's a lot of straw- I'd go with a thinner layer that's changed frequently to be sure it's clean and no mold can grow under the layers.
