The main problem in winter is not so much that there are more viruses or bugs going around...it is that the birds have to direct all their resources to temperature regulation and this in turn leaves "less" over for fighting off pathogens (disease causing organisms which are often a part of their natural gut flora>when the immune system is compromised it gives these organisms a chance to overwhelm the bird causing illness). Birds will also eat less in the winter. This is why all the literature I have read advise a supplement in the winter time .
