Could your family weather a depression?

1 of the BIGGEST things to do to prepare for "it" ,,get ready to "protect" what you have. is a sad thing to think about, BUT, when "it" does happen, how many people out of 100 will be ready?10?, maybe less? , sooo , you'll be on your farm eating eggs, meat, veggies, with 90 people (who will be armed) are watching and wanting. sure you might be able to help them 1 night, but tomorrow there will be 180 "wanting".

Hoosier, You are correct, people will not pay much attention to rules and regs. I do not know about the other people on here but we also live basically debt free. I will cut out the satellite, phone and drop the insurance to minimum on the vehicles if needed. We do not have a lot of property, but I will have a large garden next year. This year we will be canning venison, goose and duck. I will be making applesauce. We already burn wood and have our wood up for the winter.
What gets me is that I tried to get people in the outlying area to carpool, AND NO ONE WOULD. I know it is an inconveniance but come on......
I agree the1much, I agree.

I joined SufficientSelf .com a few days ago. It's a very good site as are all BYC's sites

Everybody keeps talking about something catastrophic happening in 2012. Something about the Mayan calender, don't know all the details maybe somebody else does.

There are little things that add up when you are trying to build up your food storage.

Do your best to only buy food on sale.
Buy one or two extra items of each thing each time you shop.
Buy store brands.
Buy from the discontinued and dented rack.
Buy and use dried staples like beans and rice.
Learn how to use whole wheat. I just bought 200 pounds for less than $60. that is a lot of bread, more than 30 loaves.

Some things might have to approached as if they are investments.
Electric wheat grinder that can be converted to manual.
Dehydrator.
Canning jars and other supplies.

Visit and use thrift shops.
Sometimes you can find lots of canning jars. Buy in the off season though. I went to one the other to get some pints. I found one. It's the canning season.

I'm not trying to send anybody into a panic here, but to answer werblessd1s's question, according to the Mayan calender, the world will end in 2012.

Whether you believe that or not, I think it's smart to be at least somewhat prepared for the worst. I don't think my husband and I would have a hard time weathering a depression. Hunting regulations would, of course, be ignored, just as both our grandfathers ignored them during the Great Depression.

We try to be as self sufficient as possible, that's the best anyone can do.

Maybe I'm viewing the world through rose tinted lenses.

I prefer to think that those living in the country or away from the city will have little to fear. If things tank that bad then the city folks won't be able to get to the country unless they walk. Most of them will not walk that far.

I have firearms but I do not have ammunition stockpiled for protection of my food storage.
