Could your family weather a depression?

The question is could my family weather a depression...my answer is - if one comes what options do we have other than to put one foot in front of another and put our values to the test?
I'm ready - not prepared entirely - but ready.

Great job everyobody. It's great to hear everyone getting a little more self-sufficient. Im sorry about the job losses. It seams to be so more of that lately. My hubby was down to four days and they had to lay a guy off and finall this summer got back up to 5. But, with winter on the way, things are not stable.

I have been collecting all my seeds; arugula, peppers, tomatoes, dill, basil, oregano, and more. I've also been canning up the ying yang. We haven't been buying much to can either. We're in apple country and with all the new development plans on hold, there are orchards not being maintained and we're raiding them along with other folks. It's sad to see them all go to waste. A neighbor has a pear tree they never pick, so we got the OK to grab them and the story goes on and on.

There are so many people that don't know there is food outside the grocery story:( They just aren't trained to think that way. We grew up on a farm and learned early where food comes from and it ain't Safeway!!

I like an earlier post about planting things that produce. I did blueberries, and black cherry trees this year...a quince is yummy and beautiful.

I wouldn't be very well-off with my chickens though. The little banties lay eggs the size of a quarter and they only lay for like 4 months out of the year!!!! We need to get serious in that dept. Thanks for all the advice! Keep it coming.

I hope things don't get any worse, at least until spring. It would be a long winter eating canned tomatoes, apple sauce and sauerkraut. I've started to run low on mason jars so I've been finding some in the woods in small trash heaps. I take a regular and a wide-mouth top with me to see if they would work.

Hi Everybody,

I'm new on this forum and perhaps a bit premature as I don't have any chickens yet!

I wish I did!

I have been real busy getting ready for a recession or depression or whatever you want to call it. I found this forum when I googled a question about wether kerr canning lids will fit on ball jars and up you popped! with an answer!

I thought great! I'm gonna have a lot of chicken questions before I'm done.

I don't know what is going to happen with this world, but who ever does??

But lately I'm feeling a bit over worried and hence have been expending stress energy stocking up on food. I think I have a bout a year, maybe a year and a half.

As long as we can stay employed we can weather it... but I guess it depends on how bad it gets.

We recently bought property in Idaho and my husband is there now building a garage with a studio over it. I'm dreaming of gardens to come, and chickens and all. But now I'm so worried I'm wondering if we will ever get the house built.

I have so many survival questions, and just farm/earth based living questions I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not.

Getting though a depression is I think mostly a skill of the mind along with some savoy economy and resourceful acts and compassion for oneself and the people around you.

Anyway, best to you all.
