Could your family weather a depression?

I just remembered.......the reason they say the world may end (as we know it) is because in 2012 all of most of the planets will be lined up, lined up with a black hole no less (WAY out there, blackhole) and the earth is due to do a wobble or slight shift on its axis. The scientists have confirmed.
Sorry, I just needed to clarify this because someone had brought it up. Now, I have re thought my previous answer. We are not ready, I dont know if we ever could be. BUT, we would make do with what we have and learn to salvage a lot more than we already do.
(hope this was in the right post)

aint it funny how they all think something like that is going to happen,, but refuse to think the u.s. is gonna go bankrupt.

Ummmm, I believe that we are already there, we are just too arrogant to admit it. In the backs of our minds we know something has to be done, we just havent figured out what that something is yet. There is so much wrong we dont know where to start. Kinda like cleaning a trashed house.
Anyway, I just remembered that ;ittle tidbit, so I thought I would submit it. We will deal with it as it comes. I will get off this thread now as this is really a chicken forum. Have a good day.

This is a topic on everyones mind though we Americans are so predispositioned to convenience, we cannont give it much thought to have to live any other way. Stocking up sounds like a great idea though another day goes by and it doesn't happen.

I, like other people on this site, worry more about the starving city folk coming through our rural areas in search of anything they can use. The movies are just that, but pretty much any movie that takes place after a disaster shows the survivors holding out with big guns and I'm afraid that will be the case. When there is lawlessness, the people who form an army will win.

In my case, my mother just purchase 30 acres outside Lexington, VA. (pretty rural) It's WAY off the beatin path and we could even cover the drive with trees to hide it. (saw that on a movie too!) There is a strong creek, and plenty of forest nearby as well as pasture land. My father also owns a farm in MD outside a small town. Either one of those places would be where I'm headin. I've just started saving my seeds this year. -not cause Im worried, but because I'm being more frugal about everything. We are really learning how to pinch a penny and that is a good thing:) But I will be ready with a good starter crop and some warm clothing...cause that's all you'll really need. Oh!! and a couple shotguns!

My csa was overwhelmed with second grade heirloom tomatoes (not very pretty, but still yummy) I couldn't pass any up so I've canned up the kazoo. To all of you who want to can, start with easy stuff like hot water bath canning. google it. It's super easy. Im trying this awesome yogaurt recipe on here too. Looks pretty simple.

We should all take a lesson in being more self-sufficient and make a plan. A large family can all band together on someones farm where everyone has a job. When you work together, things will be easier.

Here's to everyone being able and to never having to find out how able.

The galactic allignment already occurred in 1998, it isn't a well known fact however and people love doomsday tales...the churches seem to be preaching this end of the world thing alomng with everyone else...starnge. It this so called 2012 alignment the earth apperently will shake so much that the oceans will sweep over the and...flooding the earth...but biblically speaking God sent us the rainbow as a covenant that he will never flood the earth again...hmmm. In my lifetime I have followed so many doomsday scenerios with anticipation...and anxiety...and came to the realization that a new doomsday story pops up every year.

I couldn't read through all 21 pages of posts, so I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but I like... www.survivalblog.com

If you never read "The Patriots" you should. It would scare the pants off of you, especially in light of what happened today.

My grandmother went through the depression. I spent a long time cleaning up all of the stuff she hoarded away...ketchup and jelly packets from restaurants, crackers, tax filings from 1940. I would say she was on the verge of hoarding syndrome, but aside from the taxes and piles of bills she retained, it really could be considered "necessities." I tossed it all, but honestly, am getting a little worried.

Money is important, but what if money was no good? What if you couldn't actually buy anything? We had a Polish housekeeper/nanny when I was growing up. She would send food (mac and cheese, powdered milk, etc) back to Poland every week. They had lots of money, but there was nothing they could buy with the money back in the early 90s after the USSR broke up. What if that happened here?

I can't seem to keep the chickens out of my garden, so we'll probably starve!

Knowing what I know and having grown up outside in the boonies of southern Cali as a child, I'm more than confident that unless there was some sort of plague around here, any degree of collapse of "civilization", depression or what have you, I would be able to feed and care for the small group of friends who live around me. My greatest concern has ALWAYS been what I saw someone else mention upon browsing the replies - people from the cities having not a clue how to take care of themselves and thusly trying to raid my stuff. So I've gone heavy on the defensive aspects. The only thing that bothers me is trying to turn every rock, so to speak, in figuring out what I might have missed.

I get called paranoid all the time by people who couldn't boil water without a switch to turn on the flame. No one ever wants to think realistically, and when its time to they need someone to do it for them. I go about life in my way because waiting til its bearing down upon you is waiting til its too late. I've no intention of being caught with my trousers down.

Just wanted to add, don't put all your eggs into the money basket. In some "lighter" situations it could obviously help, but when it really gets down to the dust, money won't save you like knowing how to grow, gather and preserve food items, how to find and purify water, and how to either stay out of sight or defend yourself will.
