Countdown to receiving new chicks on oct 9th week

Sallysec, good luck! I've had chicks arrive a day later than expected, but upon inspection of the invoice, discovered they'd hatched and shipped a day later than "advertised." Hope they show up soon, though!

I barely slept, kind of used to that though since I have a four month old real baby lol. I got my four year old up and ready to school while holding the phone the entire time. I've been told by the post office that they try to call people right away to come get the so that they don't sit there long, they even open the doors when they are closed etc. sadly I was also told at the same time that a lot of the come dead . I know they left the hatchery and that the USPS site hasn't been updated, but I was told they should be here today when I ordered them as it usually is just one shipping day to my location (rockland county btw) .
I'm debating trying to get a small nap in this morning because I have a headache. Of course it's cold out and raining so that has me worried about my little peeps.

I've had the power go out on chicks used to a heat lamp for half a day when it was really cold. They kept each other warm enough and were fine. Also had it happen for an entire day when my fiance shut the light switch off, which controlled the plug. They were fine as well. I think they will keep each other warm. What I worry about is dehydration or improper handling. The latter is probably what the majority of them die from in the mail :(

More arrive fine than don't, so don't worry too much. Let us know when you get the call though!

I got an incubator already...I know it's going to be an addiction....luckily it only holds seven eggs
My incubator holds 41. It's a sickness I tell you lol.

I keep telling myself it works if you place LESS than 41 eggs in it, but I always cave and fill it up

It's a good thing chickens are easy to sell (hens) and any mixed breed boys get used for meat. I couldn't even get someone to take two cockerels for FREE at the sale because they were mixed.

Thanks ...it helps to have this website...at least I can distract myself with other people's stories and pictures. How is everyone else doing with their little ones? Ay funny stories to report?

I am amused that the hatchery will refund any sexing, breed,or deaths in the first forty eight hours.....how do you know if they made a breed mistake....I mean if I am new to this and they (whom I assume are not new to this) didn't notice....lol if they say its a duck it's a duck right? Lol

I mean I think I will know if they send me something completely off but in reali there are hundreds of posts on here of people not knowing what they got....so really I don't think you can confirm an order in forty eight hours...life vs death yeah...but sex and breed? Not so much..

Have a bat day all....will keep you up to date and post pictures too :)

Anyone getting girls from MPC this week? Please speak up and let me know what you got :)

Well, atm, my chicks are beginning to get a touch noisy. I feed wet, fermented feed, and they finished up the last bits from last night as I'm sucking down my first cup of coffee. Now it must be empty, and they're yelling for more. It only drains so fast, tho.

One or more of the broilers has been amusing us by keeping his toes spread out like he's still standing when he sprawls to nap. It's hilarious. I worried for a few that he was having issues, but when he (they? I don't try to tell them apart for obvious reasons) hits deep sleep, those toes relax and hit the sleeping pose.

If you are awake enough to post pictures, I will be up for helping you confirm breeds. Gender, not so much lol. Your barred rock is easy.

Here are a few barred rocks with broody mama :) Your australorps will look like:
1000
Your Jersey Giant will look like the Australorp but should have yellow feet instead of pink/white. Your EEs will have beards.
1000
Your GLW will look like above
1000
Your RIR (which will most likely not be a true RIR but rather a production red.) For your mystery chicks.. We'll figure that out when they arrive. :p

Sleepy chicks could soooo cute, should make for great pictures.

Aoxa, those are some great identifying pictures Ty :) I plan to take atom of pictures, I just wish I could figure out how to use the iPad to post them into the forum. I can get them into my profile but not into the discussion....can use my desktop for that it will just be slower...

So it's official.....I'm stalking my post office.....I called...not there...they promise to call....I feel so silly...if my daughter falls asleep I am thinking i will try and nap.

Some breeds are really easy to spot right off. And I laugh because I read a blog post a while ago about a hatchery actually sending a duck in a box of chicks. In the end the customer and hatchery figures that the PO put the duckling in the box (having come out of another box!) Since the hatchery didn't have any ducklings when they shipped chicks.

I've also seen video (on Dirty Jobs - I think they were at McMurray) of the box packers having to read the label on a bin to tell Mike Rowe what breed of chicks were in it. A mislabeled bin would be enough to have breed mistakes occur.
