Cousin It

It could be a hormonal thing. I remember seeing a documentary once where a woman, who was having fertility problems, found out that she was genetically a male, that is, she had XY chromosomes. It seems there was some problem that inhibited either the production of testosterone and/or progesterone, or the ability to metabolize them. She completely identified herself as female, and had no clue until she sought medical advice!
Wiki has an interesting article about the subject. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex

Things aren't always black and white. Nature has a lot of variation!

Interesting responses folks.... Thanks!!

I wish I had the money to have a vet do x-rays or whatever it is they do to check on internal makeup. I wonder if it has testes...or an oviduct...

It sure is huge and so-oooo friendly. I call "cousin it" no matter where it is and it comes running; lets me fluff it up and pet it.

And it eats well and it is healthy...

I feel bad that all the other birds ignore it. At night, it sleeps on the ground by itself... I might be it's BFF

It sure looks like a rooster to me......do you have other roosters? I have never seen a hen with long ears and wattles like that. I would guess it is a very submissive 2nd in line rooster.....kept very much in line by the head honcho. Remove your RIR roo, and you may see some normal "rooster" traits.

Hi Nella Bean. Thanks for your response. Yes, from the front, it looks like a rooster, very large comb and those wattles!!! As big as a rooster... My RIR rooster is very gentle, runs when he sees me and maybe his own shadow. But he mates well, even politely I might add

When I incubate eggs or someone is broody all his eggs are fertile and hatch out.

I have heard that sometimes hens take on rooster traits...but the large wattles, etc. seems so roosterish to me.

It did not have a pink comb early on, like many roosters do as very young birds. It does flog me if I pick up a hen and she screams... but IT comes over to me in the morning, squats low, I pat its back and pat the vent and it shakes and ruffles its feathers and makes a noise and goes on for the day....

Always sleeps alone, never goes near the hen boxes. Keeps to itself, until it sees me and then it runs towards me.

I will have to try and remove the rooster, but like I said, he is very mellow. And very gentle. Not like is Dad Rudy, who is a holy terror, and will only let me near him. I can even pick up Rudy and dance around with him.

Thanks for your note.

Hey zazouse--yes it does. The vent is very pink, moist and 2 fingers wide so why it doesn't breed, lay eggs, etc. I have no idea.

None of the other birds go near it but they don't hurt it. And it is very big and eats alot.

One thing I know for sure--I will continue to keep it comfortable and content. It is playful with me and very friendly, and knows its name!!

It would be great though, if the professionals could check medically and we could all know what 'IT' really is.

Thanks for your response.

Gabby--I think so too. Maybe an x-ray would confirm a lot of things, not in the budget at this time... "Cousin It" has become quite an item around here. Very friendly to me. Glad we are friends!! Thanks for writing. Sue
