Coyote Advice Sought

Just as an FYI. Without the FOID card... it's a class C felony for you to even possess one shotgun shell. Much less a gun. Doesn't matter if you shoot it or not.

If I were you, I'd find a local hunter or trapper to take care of your coyotes.

I'm a state licensed nuisance animal trapper and while I'm too far away to help you out, there are a bunch of such trappers in your area too. The downside is that most will charge quite a bit of money to remove the offending animals. (but it's a lot less work and hassle on your part)

You don't need to kill every yote... but the ones that are taking your chickens will continue to be a problem until they are removed. (this pretty much goes for any nuisance animal)

Good luck!

Sounds like it would also keep the chickens' anxiety level always high as they would be hearing it all the time.

UPDATE:
The coyotes were back. We have the 12 ga near the door but when I ran out the door all I grabbed was the cell phone. It didn't occur to me to grab the gun and load it first. I just wanted to get out there ASAP. Disaster averted I stood guard. This was the first time we had seen a coyote near the coop since we got the gun on premisis. We have seen them but they were mousing in the field and ran when they heard sound from the house direction. Obviously not the ones I was looking for and I'm not going to just shoot things at will. I don't mind sharing my 14+ acres with respectful predators.
So, I stood there and stood there - wondering if I should go back in and get the gun. I had called my husband and he just gave me safety pointers and a "stay safe" warning and a "call me when it's done". Talking to the chickens until they calmed down. Then a stag walked quietly, unhurridly and unafraid across the field 100' from me. Well I couldn't go get the gun and not watch that. Then the coyote poked his head out of the woods and I yelled at him and he ran back. Then our resident hawk was overhead and was making lazy circles in the sky searching for vermin. It was so graceful I had to stay and watch. An hour and a half passed before DH called and asked if Iwas alright and if he had some "clean-up" to do. I told him I was still out there and never went in for the gun.
OH well. Next Time I guess.
Still planning to do the "bait thing with the chicken in the small cage" and a FOID owner on property. Might have to wait a week since the chickens, coop and all, are going into the garage while we are away on vacation. We've some one who will be house sitting but I don't want them to have the heartbreak or the responsibility of protecting the babies while we are away if anything would happen so we will just protect them indoors.

FOID Card in Hand
Situation: "Handled" by adjusting coyote population by just 1.
Other coyotes are doing their job mousing in the field and ingnoring my flock.
Thank you all very much!

Must be an Illinois thing. I don't have a FOID card and have a .22, .357,. pellet pistol and .410

I never heard anyone around here ever mention FOID card

I'm pretty sure it's just an Illinois thing. Never heard mention of one in NC, either. Heck, half the guns here aren't even registered.

I think they live too close to Obama. We need to keep our right to bears arms! Our chickens need protection. I have a big trap 30" X 30" X 60" set for a coyote that I caught red-footed a couple days ago digging under my chicken pen. Then I have two pretty big coon traps set cause coon ate 2 of my chickens the other night. Justice will be swift, no appeals.
