Coyote Patrol

I second the motion on using a shotgun. If I were out in the boonies or on a large acreage, I would use a .223 or similar wildcat caliber to preserve the fur. But for a situation like this around houses and livestock, shotgun.

They'll be back. Shooting doesn't do much for overall pop. control - pressured 'yotes breed more. Sure works as "behavior modification" on the survivors though!

I noticed you stated it would be hard to shoot after dark and just wondered how you knew there were 7 then? With multiple coyotes, you are just asking for problems if your dog is not skilled in going after them. Most likely you will be burying your pet soon or at least taking it in for emergency surgery. Contact a damage control trapper and have them remove the coyotes asap. You are only asking for problems by allowing the coyotes into your small acreage. If they are confident and fearless enough to approach such a small acreage parcel they will return often until they feed. I would assume you are unskilled with a rifle or shotgun so you need to contact someone asap to remove the coyotes before you loose your flock.

Debbie, the coyotes are going to size Scooter up and kill him. It would break my heart to read a post that your dog was killed by coyotes. Please be careful with him.

That being said. Get Scooter inside so there is no risk of hitting him and kill those coyotes.

Just curious, where are you located? I have heard them howl and seen a couple crossing the road but so far have not seen them on my property, although sometimes at night my big dogs go nuts barking, wonder if they see them. Everything I own is put up safely. Sometimes when I feed in the early am I feel a litte weird, like something is lurking in the woods!!!

I said 7-10 could be more could be less. We live in too rural of an area for anyone to even TRY to round up the multitude of coyotes.

yes I have been told that they will send out a b**ch in heat and hide and wait to ambush the male dog that will follow the female that attracted him. then once the male dog is in the right spot the rest of the pack attack.

Please be very careful and if your dog is not fixed be on the lookout for a tactic like that one.

Shoot them if you have a gun, or if you hav a bb or paintball gun use that so that they assoiciate your property with pain. It works around here cuz we have 2 long acres and around winter we get several small packs in the area and since im not allowed to use a real gun so i shoot them high powered with my bb and the same one doesnt come back except to the ditch nearby where the packs come from the rio grande... Why cant they just stay in the Bosque? Seriously oh and ive also heard that if you buy skunk pee or spray the wont come around for obvious reasons and vice versa. Hope this helps.

Debi... FWIW I deer hunt using a 20ga. shotgun with 2 3/4' slugs. When the season is over it gets cleaned and reloaded with #3 buckshot and is always in a handy location. (I live alone so there is no worry about anyone else having acess to it) Great predator protection and great personal protection as well. Using buckshot also may enable you to take out more than one at a time. JMHO Swimmingly yours.

If I remember correctly from my younger days, television taught me that if you want to get rid of a coyote, all one needs is a box from the ACME corporation and a large roadrunner.
