coyote's howled and I got scared...

Quote:
Come spend a night in my yard.
Trust me it ain't a treat.
I hate those mangy things and the noises they make.
They're best dead.

That's just wrong. It's a live animal trying to survive? How can
people be so insensative and kill them. Murderers.

Now if someone can produce a good coyote recipe I'd be all for it.

Yep, I'm a murderer.
I snare those mangy creatures and kill 'em.
Next time your over we'll have to try deep fried coyote.
I bet they taste kinda like cat just greasier.

Yes this is the impression I'd gotten when the dogs didn't blink an eye at the howling and prior to that the dogs were going crazy like they were "chasing something off"

I think they know things we have no clue of "when all is silent"....

We have coyotes around here. I hear them at night from time to time. The neatest time I had with them was a few years back when my parents and my nephew were staying the night with us. My nephew was just a young little guy at the time, and so when my dog started going crazy outside (Siberian Husky) I immediately got up to go see what was going on. She was kept under the yardlight then, and I didn't see what she was so riled up about. I went outside and then saw at the edge of the light a coyote that had come up. It and my dog were nose to nose and playing! It ran off when it saw me. I never felt threatened by it or anything like that. It was just curious as to why my dog couldn't go with it, I think. It came back for a couple nights after that and we haven't seen any come in so close since then. The sound of coyotes doesn't bother me, because if you've ever heard huskies howl you'll know that it's a sound that will send shivers down your back. The yips and such of a coyote just don't compare.

We have since moved my dog to the other side of the house and we also got her littermate sister for her to have as a companion. Nothing comes near the dogs with the second one around. She's too much the hunter. I know I'll really have to watch out when I finally am able to get chickens.

We have a 6ft chain link fence with desert behind us. We have had coyotes try to bait my dog and the neighbor's dog.

One of the coyotes was even playing with one of the dog's toys, that had gone over the fence.

They walk away from us when we are out walking and happen to cross paths with them. But they will snatch small dogs and cats, if given the chance.

I worry more about the bob-cats getting my chickens. They can jump our fence, but so far, so good.

99% of the time Coyotes are solitary animals, if I remember right they can only breed about September so the young will be ready to leave the den in spring so mom can teach them how to survive and mom and pups are to only group that I have ever seen together outside of mating season. Hard winters and slim pickings will also bring them together so they can take larger game down such as full grown deer or cattle.
The horses kill dogs that get into their pasture but they let Coyotes have a free pass for some reason. I've even seen them nose to nose checking each other out. A kodak moment with me standing there empty handed.

Ooooh, not my geldings, the "Three Stooges." I once saw them chase a coyote they flushed out of the woods and were having a ball doing it. Actually it did seem to be more play than all-out horsey malise. It was fun to watch. The coyote, only one of the bunch NOT having a good time, finally gave them the slip in a clump of trees.
