Coyotes

Coyotes can and will dig holes, typically they will burrow out smaller holes burrowed by other animals. They have to be able to dig for their dens. You need to make sure the fence extends below the surface of the ground to avoid them and other animals

:welcome :frow Yes, a coyote can dig under a fence. They are great diggers. They live in dens that they either dig out or other critters dens they enlarge. Fox also make dens and are great diggers. Most any predator will dig to get a chicken. Most predators including a coyote will explore first with their nose. I have electric wires around my coops and pens and nothing messes with the hot wires especially once they get zapped. I think the adults teach the youngsters that a chicken isn't worth getting zapped for. In lieu of electric wires some people put aprons around the bottom of their fence out at least a foot. In some places I have dug a trench along the bottom of a fence and put wires down in the trench a foot deep and connected the wire I buried to the bottom of the fence. There are several things you can do to prevent predators from digging under a fence. I also had issues with a fox digging under a gate so I put concrete under all of my pens gates. I covered all of my pens with good heavy duty netting because of aerial predators. Good luck and have fun...

Here we have gopher tortoises. A coyote or fox will enlarge their dens and move into them.
