coyotes

Around my place, coyotes sing every night. When they start, my two dogs start barking. More times than I can count, my dogs sleep by the chicken pen, then run off in the woods barking. Soon they are back, sleeping by the pen. Thus far, I haven't lost any chicks to coyotes. I do plan to run an electric wire though, because it seems the coons have are starting to be a problem for my next door neighbor, and he is only a mile down the road. Gingerlilypad

Everything is hungry and if there is a chance that it can get a good meal it is going for it....Keep a close eye out and you might want to get a gun and take some target practicing....actually if you practice enough there the coyotes will be somewhat afraid to come by I would think...

Well tonight he was back and I got a better look at it from the side rather from the back end and I'm pretty sure it was a fox. It was just at dusk when nothing is too clear. I yelled out the back door and he took off, but he is definitely sizing up my chickens. The chickens told me he was out there, made an awful fuss, even the rooster I have in the garage to grow out feathers (that were pecked out) was upset. My Silver Sebright went in the coop and wouldn't come out even after he was gone.

Told my son to bring his pellet gun over tomorrow and will do the hot wire thing. I just had major rotator cuff surgery (tore my rotator cuff and my biceps moving the chicken house, of course) and don't think I'll be shooting anything myself anytime soon. Can you trap a fox? Would you want to? What the heck would you do with a very angry fox (besides shoot it/make a purse out of it)?

Fox, coon, coyote, dog, cat, or any other predator. If it is after my chickens, I will trap it or shoot it. Not sure how much use the pellet gun will be! Unless it is one with a CO2 cartridge. The airsoft type don't have enough force. They sting some, but not enough to really stop a determined predator. I suggest a 22 rifle. If you do shoot it with a pellet gun, and only hurt it, it is more likely to be looking for an easy catch meal.
