I was trying to candle my broody's eggs, and the flashlight fell and hit the egg I was trying to candle. It was a viable egg. It gave it a tiny crack. I was panicking and read that you can cover the crack in candle wax and that someone did that and their chick survived. I covered the crack in candle wax and have been re-covering it. I candled it again a few days ago and it still seems good. But the crack is getting bigger and it is not because the chick is pipping. I just re-covered it this morning and noticed that the crack is bigger. Does this chick have a chance? I feel terrible.

Do you mean the crack is extending further, or the gap is getting wider? Maybe the wax is seeping in? Can you get a pic?

If you are positive the chick is still moving, I'd stop adding wax. What day of incubation are they on?

I had 2 hens put 2 dents in an egg, and I taped it with medical paper tape. It happened 10 days ago, I'm hoping to see a pip when I get home today.

As long as the membrane is good it has a chance. The wax may be drying and slightly expanding or the business going on inside may be furthering the crack. If you're still pretty early on a thin smear of elmers white glue will do the trick, it expands with the egg so it's great for fixing cracks.

I don't think the wax is seeping in, I think the heat from the momma hen is melting it, and her feathers are brushing it off, which is why I keep having to re-coat it. I think I'll put medical tape on it tomorrow morning. I'm so worried! Thank you for your help! I completely forgot to mark when I put the eggs under the bantam, but I guessed and yesterday was what I thought was day 21 but I could be off by about four or five days. I'd say they're due to hatch any day now.

Oh heck, i totally read over the "broody" comment and assumed they were in an incubator. Sorry!

If you decide to tape it, just be mindful of where it may pip and how it will zip. I peeled part of the tape off of mine, where i think it could impede zipping. It has now internally pipped, but no external yet. I'm probably going to end up assisting. Hopefully your broody will help if it needs it.

I'm hoping the little guy will be fine. If he doesn't hatch, I'll feel like it's all my fault!

Shoot, you've done so much already! Don't feel that way. We'll hope for the best!

What breed and how many eggs does she have?

Gotta share a pic of one of my broodies, i took today. :)

She is a Dutch Bantam, and she has three EE eggs.
Here is a pic of her with her last hatch. Thats Kindle poking out, the only hen of the four chicks hatched! And then Bantam (thats her name, just Bantam!) with all of them:
