Crack in viable egg

Bad news! This morning I saw she had three eggs, like usual, but one wasn't hers and the one with the crack was no where to be found. Now she only has two. I'm assuming a snake took it. I've heard that the cheap minnow traps at Walmart catch snakes, I'll be picking one up probably today. For now I added a box of plywood which I use as a addition so the chicks have more room onto the nesting box, it doesn't have any large cracks for a snake to get through, I also put some eggs away from the nesting box to deter the snake away from the Bantam's eggs. I'm so sad!!! :(

That's really too bad. I'm sorry for you! :(

Oh no! Are you sure she wasn't just hiding it?

Positive. I dug through the shavings of the entire nesting box and of the main coop near the nesting box. It is gone. I know the other chickens didn't eat it because they would be covered in blood and yolk. There is zero trace of it. I also think thats why I'm not getting as many eggs. I think the snake may be eating them. I'm so mad and sad. :hit

So yesterday, I realized the 2 eggs in my incubator that i had taped were not the ones that were closest to hatching. Another did hatch. But now i have the 2 with tape on them. just checked and one has internally pipped. I've never gotten a repaired one this far! Its been in there for 13 days, since i found it cracked under a broody. I'm debating pulling the tape off. Scared its going to get in the way of a zip.

I think very, very carefully pulling it off would be a good idea. Make sure you don't enlarge the crack or pull pieces off. If you do and the membrane is exposed, rub coconut oil on the membrane to keep it from drying out. And if you see pieces starting to come off, I would stop and just watch and take it off if you see the chick absolutely has to have it off. Good luck!

Ugh!! :hit

I had been losing some eggs and thought maybe a hen was eating them. I'm still considering putting a game cam in the coop to see what i can discover.

You would see some yellow on them if they were eating them, and the shavings would be yellow and stuck together in the nesting box because they can't get every bit of egg off the shavings. A game cam would be a great idea. Let me know what you come up with

I use Vaseline, but the biggest crack was more like a punch, so i know some chips would come off. I'm gonna wait and see where it pips, then decide. Will do a full assist if necessary.
