Crazy Silkie colors! Does that mean it's a Roo?

When I look at your pic...what I notice first are the big waddles and the start of streamers out the back off his head..definitely roo

My roo's have round heads just like my pullets and I couldn't tell the one was a roo until it started crowing...mystery solved

Kfacres, I am in NC.

Leadwolf, that is a beautiful little Silkie Roo!! When did he start crowing?

Brandon, this is my only Silkie. I have two gold sex-link hens, no other rooster. Since I'm outside the city, I'm allowed to have roosters. However we unknowningly bough into a new development with an HOA. I am currently awaiting a vote in September and am hoping to change the HOA ordinance that disallows all poultry. I am very hopeful that it is going to pass and be a non-issue...however, the proposed change to the ordinance I wrote up does say "no roosters." Even though we're out in the country and can hear rooster in either direction from our large development, I thought "no roosters" would be my best bet for getting the ordinance changed. Shot myself in the foot there.
The sex-links are 2-3 months older than baby Ann, and essentially "raised him" since he was a hatchling. He acts like their little sister, following them everywhere, watching the lead hen to see what to do & when. I've never heard him crow, and he is significantly quitter (even when he barks) than the hens. My husband says "if HE doesn't crow, then SHE can be our hen that doesn't lay." haha I'd love to keep him, but if he crows, I will have to get rid of him. The breeder said when we got the hatchling we could exchange it if it turned out to be a Roo....but I don't want to think about baby Ann ending up in someones freezer.

OmAnNom - I am not really a fan of the silkies, but he is a cutie.

I was just wondering if I could get a copy of what you are proposing for HOA changes? I am president of our HOA and I am trying to get our rules changed to allow chickens.

Here's hoping that it goes through for you !

Best of luck!

He started crowing at about 16 -17 weeks old. His 'brother' started crowing the week before so I was so hoping that General Lee was going to be a girl...no such luck

He is beautiful and a sweetheart but now I have two silkies roos and I want to keep both!

Here's a picture of Grant...they are inseparable...

One thing about their crowing...it's not all that loud....maybe you will get lucky

I will HAPPILY send you what I have! It would be easiest to send it as a Word attachment, so you can quickly cut/paste and edit to suit your needs. Can you message me your email address?

Glad you got this figured out...I ordered two unknown chicks that ended up being one of each (lucky me). I have actually enjoyed the roo more then the hen, she's always been flightier. The roo comes right up to people (might have something to do with me feeding him whole peanuts), he will "talk" to you, and stands right outside the bay windows, watching what goes on inside (even despite my dogs attempting to penetrate glass to get to him). He also allows himself to be handled very nicely, I rarely have to chase him, yet he knows to stay out of the way of my toddler (right out of reach is a better description!

He also has those blonde streaks on his neck - I can't post pics yet, but you can see his pix on my BYC page. I have been comparing him to other silkie pix on this forum, and his comb seems a little different then a true silkie. The hen also looks very different from other silkie hens I've seen on here. Might have a mutt thing going on...

I also added some pix of them as chicks, in hindsight of course you can tell a lot of subtle things that helped me distinguish them.
Oh, and by the way, about the crowing...my roo has never been aggressive or flies around, etc. but if you are not used to hearing crowing, it will "disturb" you, regardless of how loud it is. Maybe it's my sleep patterns, but mine always wakes me up (good thing is he rarely starts before 7 am), but that's how I can "check" daily to make sure he's okay

The crowing is definitely better once they've learned how to; otherwise they just sound like something deflating :S
