Cream Crested Legbar x French Black copper Marans - sexable?

Ok. I blew it. I know to use Welsummers now, but that doesn't help with the chicks I have. Can sex because they are all black. If one gets a crest, that would make it a pullet - right? I think that because some are starting too and I'm thinking that might be the dominant trait from dad. At some point i thought i saw some red on some - appears to be gone) - was that the trait from mom on the males? Any input?

thank you. The crest info is very helpful. Barring info too! is there a book you'd recommend on what genes do what..... like chicken genes for dummies type thing. lol.
