Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

Rose combs are much better for the freezing aspect. We are in N. Michgian and was -30 here this winter, any roo with a large comb doesnt have it anymore and there is nothing really you can do about it with those kinds of temps.

Well except maybe flying monkey's rose comb CL project . I consider a comb that will not freeze so easily a improvement . I know apples and oranges .

Im a fan of that project too! Single sombs look nice when they are intact but frostbite is an issue some of us face. My males look like I dubbed them.

I wonder why they did not go with a cushion or V comb in the beginning . No crest issue on those combs plus no frostbite .

Maybe because the winters in England are milder.
Good catches you guys.... Thanks jerryse, I stand corrected -- somewhat -- ;o)
Punnett wanted to separate the blue egg gene from Pea comb - I think. I rather wish he would have kept pea comb.....

I agree depends on where your at, if your warmer it doesnt matter and they are pretty but up here in the frigid north we have to think about those things lol.

A different comb would mostly get rid of the crest causing crooked combs . That must be why most crested breeds do not have single combs .

I have had lots of orders for the rose comb legbar eggs this season just because everyone had such issues with frost bite. I am so very glad I kept going with my project and ignored some members that said they would never be legbars because of the outcross.

A note on the comb and crest- the rose combs do get pushed forward by the crest and my legbar x ambar pullet has a scrunched comb as well. I remember that in the old APA standards that it used to say the silkie comb was a triple spiked rose comb plus crest which gave it the appearance that it had.
The way I deal with it is that around 3 months, I go through the birds for combs. That is about the age that the combs are still small enough that they are either straight or the are crooked. Even at hatch I have seen some single combed chicks with curved combs that are written out as breeders

I slipped 4 "Creamsicle" (Silkie male X CL female) blue eggs under my broody Cochin just now. If there is another laid tomorrow I will give her that one also. Im excited to see this cross. Now lets hope they are fertile.
Can't wait to see them!!

I have to confess that I just tracked down a Silkie breeder and I am traveling over 2 hours each way on Saturday to go pick up some chicks so I can try creamsicles. I seriously have a problem and need an intervention. Sigh.
