Cream Legbars

It really interesting about roosters. I had 3 mixed breed roos I was selling on Craigslist last fall and got an unexpectedly large number of calls. I put them up for $5 each and sold them to a lady that was homesteading and wanted roos to protect and procreate. Many calls from folks with foreign accents that would eat (I'm ok with)/use for bait (not ok with--but how do you tell the difference?) so I waited a week and had no trouble. I have a friend that just 'sold' a rare Buff Laced Brahma cockerel--she had listed him for $35 but ended up giving him away to a lady who wanted him as a flock rooster. She only got the one call at the $35 price. Most roo around here are either free or around $10 and they are seldom re-listed.

I have to agree. I do find the adult roos easier to sell than the chicks - when people see them they like the colors and are willing to pay for them. Of course by then I have more than $10 of feed in them, but I have to get rid of the culls some how. What I hate is when someone sees one of the roos and says... oh yeah, my cousin has one like that... I'm like ... um... I bet they don't.

Thats not always the case....In SE PA, alot go for free...urban and suburban folks usually can't keep roos and don't want their pets to end up in camp Kenmore....My boy was free...and I have assisted a friend adopt 4 full blooded boys for her flock: CCL, Isbar, Welsummer, Serma....all from BYC folks that hatched eggs....I haven't been to the closest auction (Green Dragon) but BYC folk have mentioned buying/selling extra boys at $1-2 each sometimes. And, there was one lady on Philly CL that had 8 free MFC bantams cockerals...of course access to quality pullets is another story....my two cents....

Hi I hv some questions for all you CLB breeders out there. I have 3 Roos and 7 pullets that I've raised from eggs. I bought them off EBay from a farm in CA who said they were from 1st gen GFF. They are now 16 weeks old. So far, only 5 pullets hv crests, and they are fairly small. Will the crests continue to grow as they mature or after first molts? Second question: of the 3 Roos, #1 is really big, has the same coloring as #3 but has a huge comb and wattles w/ pretty big "thumb prints", #2 has the best coloring (less chestnut over wings and cream saddle feathers) but has a crooked comb, and #3, he's the smallest and has a perfect straight comb but has a lot more chestnut over his wings/saddle. Which one should I use as my breeder? I'm going to pen him w/ the best 3 hens. Thanks!

Let's see, I think my girls' crests were pretty much their full size by POL, so maybe 24 weeks?
Could you alternate roos #2 and #3? If not, I'd go with #3 since a straight comb is hard to get. Thumbprints are a DQ so that knocks 31 out of the book IMO, plus the huge wattles/comb seems to go hand in hand with flop.

I'm in central Michigan. My pair were fine except the rooster lost some tips on the points of his comb. They got along very well with my flock of many different breeds.

As I recall the winters in Southeast MA (where I lived for awhile) were noticeably milder than Michigan's. don't know about Eastern MA, though.
