Cream Legbars

Hello cream legbar people, we are starting with chickens in spring and we are going to get some cream legbar hens (1 or 2) as part of our small backyard flock. I want to get a rooster, and I think I am right in believing that if we had a cream legbar cock that he would pass on the blue egg gene to his offspring? I was very interested in the posts about breeding sex links as well, so we could breed to white/silver coloured hens to get sex links from a cream legbar roo?

Thanks

Hey there,

There are some of us who are experimenting with cream legbar hybrids and crosses. The thread is new and just getting started but you may want to subscribe and check it out as well.

what do you think of these birds. They are from an ebay auction I was watching. They are not the ones I won eggs from.

Congratulations!!!!!!! You won CL eggs. That means like all of us, you have a flock that needs working on, once you get chicks to hatch. Hope you will have a good hatch.

I would say that the rooster looks like a nice chap for type and has a long back. Can't see his comb well but it looks upright, and the legs and beak are yellow -- almost looks like I can see his crest from here. His red or chestnut is something to diminish in future generations, and his neck-hackles look quite light.

If the two hens I think are CL in the back are CLs - they have high tails -- but seem to have nice body depth - and the CL on the far right has nice salmon. Depending on what the babies are like--- you are well on your way.

Yes the CL dad will pass on the blue egg gene. Theoretically any silver based hen COULD produce sexlinks under a CL roo, but it will depend on how dark the chick down is as to whether or not they will be easily sexable.

This boy would be a rough start for a flock. Way too much autosomal red (which is very difficult to breed out) and he is not cream, AND he has the typical US high tail angle. He does have good body shape though and a nice comb. It would be workable but you wouldn't have great offspring right off the bat, it would take several generations of selective breeding and culling to have decent birds.

I looked at these ones, too. He has 3 roos in the pen. As ChicKat said, this front one has problems with color and a high tail. There is one behind him that has really good color but I think a squirrel tail. Then there is one behind him that looks cream but with 'dark' barring on the chest. They might be worth taking a chance on if the price was right. I did not bid because there is a mis-colored bird partially hidden by the front rooster's tail. I would personally cull that bird and because it was shown in the pen I figured this was not a serious breeder looking to improve his flock.

the hens look pretty nice, seems like 3 different shades of cream.. and it also looks like there is some younger males in the pen that are more cream. although the one in the far back might be different bird or a really dark with Cream CL. the Roo in the middle and the hens look nice for something to start with if they were separated.

Ive seen some welsummer x cream legbar on a different site they kinda looked like this guy in the front. the hen behind his tail is a crested hen and looks crazy. They might have that pen all mixed up.

There was a discussion awhile back about CLs on eBay -- and I put in a LONG post about why not to buy from eBay.  I can't find it now to PM the original poster - (and I have looked...I will put this in the other CL threads...too) --

Just saw some really nice photos on eBay of some really nice CLs and I bet that you COULD get good CLs on eBay -- and if the eBay seller happened to be geographically near you it could be an advantage.

so sorry for being so opinionated and closed minded.  I have to say -- I got my first CLs from Craig's List and they happened to be my best.  The last batch I got from Craig's List happened to be my worst CLs....but "you pays your money and you takes your chances..."  (I also bought my very first chickens on Craig's List and one of them was the perfect chicken and one of the others was the sickest chicken in the state....so

I apologize to the person that I implied that nothing good can come from eBay -- I happened across this seller....

I think the photo shows a very nice hen---and the rooster has six points does he not - oh you of sharper eyes than mine...??

So -- Apology to eBay sellers, and to the poster who asked.  If I could find my old post, I would PM you -- but I think now-and-then BYC posts do go to electronic dust...   (but I think that they can reappear from that parallel Universe).....

I did just that I was able to find a semi-local source from an eBay listing that worked out wonderful I had 6/7 hatch and so far they are looking pretty nice at least a place to start! I'm otherwise nervous to order from someone on there as I have heard of so many using pictures of birds that aren't their own and some don't even post pics so who knows you could be getting any old backyard mix you could make yourself. Ameraucana/EE is a perfect example of misleading ppl! In some instances it's just not knowing in others it's intentional which is sad!!
