Cream Legbars

Well, I had a great time at the Gilmanor Swap in Virginia this Saturday. I ran into a couple who closing her chicken operation in preparation of a move from North Carolina to Maine. I got a pair of cream legbar chicks and some hatching eggs at a great price. While I am always glad to get another pullet, I am really excited by this little male. His colors are a very light grey with a very clear large head spot.

These are my new babies!

(John Deere makes an excellent background - LOL)

Here are my thoughts!!

You need to package them up at once and send them to me...I know you wouldn't even want them on your place.

So, I have eggs from my Golden Laced Wyandotte hen and my CCL roo is the daddy. I decided to incubate a couple just for fun. Any genetics pros out there that can predict what I am going to end up with besides "a chicken", LOL!? She lays Cream to Pinkish cream colored eggs.

You might want to check out the cream legbar hybrid thread. There are some good informational links and others who are working with cream legbar crosses.

Hi can someone tell me if this cream legbar chick is a hen or a roo? The one in the front looking to the left. It has the chipmunk stripes which I think mean hen but it also has a clearly defined white spot on its head.... thoughts?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Aaron,
The distinct chipmunk stripes and the eyeliner stripe say female. The small white dot in the dark patch on the head is present in some females. It's different and smaller than the big blotch of light white/cream on male chicks and their stripes are diffused. I'm putting in a vote for a female. Pretty chicks. where did you get your eggs?

Welcome to BYC btw.... I see two chicks there the yellow one and the black one that aren't CLS and there is a white one in the foreground too...are you 100% sure that this chick is "pure CL" - If there is another breed involved the autosexing of CLs may not be applicable. Keep us posted as the chick grows.

also, just FYI, i recently hatched two hybrid chicks from a CL hen + swedish flower rooster -- when they hatched, one had a HUGE white dot on its head, the other looked mostly chipmunk-y -- but both are now (at about 4 weeks old) looking like boys, so the auto-sexing traits have definitely gotten muddled...

Of the 9 female CLs I have in my brooder, 2 of them have the chipmunk stripe and had a white dot on their head. Now that they are 3 weeks old, the 2 have clearly grown into females. On one, the spot grew into a crest (which I have never seen at 3 weeks). The other one's one spot just sort of fell out. I remember reading somewhere that the British standard allows for white spots on female chicks as long as the chipmunk pattern is distinct. But if I am wrong, most likely someone here will correct me.

All of my CLs came directly from GFF and are a mix of their 2nd line and their 2013 line.

Here are some pics of the females that had white spots.

And here is the top chick at 3 weeks:

Thanks for your help ChicKat! That makes sense to me I was a little unsure when I bought it.

I just bought these 2 chicks yesterday from a local breeder that has purebread Cream Legbars to add to the ones I hatched last week myself... none of my blue egg layers hatched. I also hatched German New Hampshire (yellow chicks), Black Copper Marans (black obviously), Olive Eggers (gray chicks) and Welsummers.... so those are the other chicks in the brooder with these new ones. Really excited to have a couple of this cool breed!

Thanks again for your help.

I bought chicks from the Old Farm House folks in TX: she sent me beautiful, healthy and well packaged chicks (and 2 extra roos and pullets). All survived and have thrived. One started laying last week (20 wks) and 2 this week, 4 more to go. They are all very typy, not perfect, but much like I see on this link and just like her pictures. If I could mix and match all their qualities, I could make some perfect birds, and I think they are a good place to start. I know you have to be careful on eBay, but she's a good one to buy from!

Good information, and yes you can mix and match. That is the fun of breeding owning your own flock. You choose which strengths you like in each of your foundation birds and then select for them year after year untill they they are locked into your line. :)
