I've had mine on lights since early January. They aren't laying fabulous but considering most are just now coming into lay they are doing pretty well. The only breed I have outlaying the cream Legbars are the isbars. I have 3 hens and 7 pullets in the cream leg bar pen and I'm getting 4-6 eggs per day from them. We've had an exceptionally cold winter, both in the actual temps and the number of days that stayed below freezing. However we've been in the 60s for 3 days and the 10 day forecast is incredible. I expect the eggs to begin flowing now!My 4 girls (10 mos old) have been laying consistently all winter. Most days 4 eggs. Now I live in South south south TX, but even we've had a cold winter (only 1 day below freezing), but lots of days in the high 30's and 40's. Maybe our girls don't like the cold? Has anyone had their chix under lights? We keep the lights on 16hrs/day in the barn to keep our horses from growing winter hair coats. Commercial egg folks do the same for eggs, right?
Sorry, but I would've taken my best shot! There was a huge ruckus going on outside so went to the door to take a look and ... thank goodness I replaced the aviary netting this fall. Some one was looking for a mid-winger snack me thinks.and off he goes! No take out today for Mr. Hawk. Hope the netting keeps holding up - another Nor'easter on the way tomorrow. Spring can't come soon enough for me.

My girls haven't even slowed down!!!! I'm in Ms and we've had unusually cold weather! But it hasn't effected their laying AT ALL!!!!! I bought a scale meant for weighing fish, I'm going to attach a 1 gal jug with the bottom and neck cut out (I've used it before as a kill cone) and punch a hole in it to hang on the scale. Then I can zero it out, plop a bird in, and get the weight. Need to get out and do it this week... but first later tonight I will be adding my weekly pics of my 6 baby girls.![]()
