Cream Legbars

hey all. I'm new to the breed and don't have time to read thru 4500 posts. LOL

Just hatched my first ccl. 2 pullets 3 cockerels.

I'm curious after reading the last couple pages, how much of a problem aggression is with ccl roosters? I refuse to keep a breed that I can't trust.

my primary breeds right now are bantam cochins, Dorkings and Swedish Flower Hens, and everyone is pretty much under foot and in the way. especially when food is involved. LOL

Welcome to the wonderful world of Cream Legbars ki4got and Kalalyn!

Out of the 20 or so CL roosters that I've grown out to 6 months plus, 1 had to be culled for aggression ( we don't keep any cock that pecks the baby girl). I don't think that's too bad, and most of the boys gave been very gentle aside from brief hormonal bursts around 16 and 24 weeks-where they get protective.

Hey all! I just got a pair of CLB from someone around here in Alaska. They are about 8 weeks old now. I'm not sure if I will breed them or not, but I think they are great birds already. They are a little more timid than my others, but it may be because they are the newest and a little smaller still than the rest of my flock who are all a week or so older. I also got a CLB/EE mix who was an "accidentally fertilized by the wrong roo" egg. I'm excited to see what color she lays. I'm hoping she will lay blue as well. Belle (pure) Penelope (mix) Beast (pure)
Congrats on your new CL's and mix! We lived in Fort Wainwright for 3 years while my husband was stationed there. Being Texans we were ready to leave the 9 months of winter behind...now we miss it like crazy!

I culled 3 of the 4 CL cockerels I had about 3 months ago because of aggression. Not only were they aggressive but they would attack in packs and surround me. I had to carry my rooster stick with me every time I went to go collect eggs.

I have a CL cockerel that is probably the nastiest cockerel I have raised in my entire chicken raising life. He was fine in his quarantine cage. But as soon as he was taken to the coop he changed from sweet and gentle to he// on wings with all his flogging. The first time he attacked me was with NO warning at all. My question is ...... since he is less than 6 months old does any body think he will come to his senses after his hormones subside a little?

It's possible... but that sounds pretty aggressive. If I were you I would give him at least a month or two to settle down, combined with your choice of humiliation therapy (catching and carrying around, spray bottle, etc).

@ki4got good to see you over here, I've always appreciated your wisdom on the SFH thread even though I don't comment over there much. My 2 year old Cream Legbar rooster is an absolute gentleman, and none of his boys have shown any aggression so far. Temperment may depend at least a little on the line you are raising? Sounds like at least 1 CL line has quite a bit of aggression based on what @DCchicken said.

I've got 12 hens and 1 rooster at the moment, plus about 5 pullets and 6 cockerels in the wings (half the cockerels are already pegged for other breeders). My only gold colored hen is in a pen to make sexlinks, she has tried to go broody THREE times this spring! However she is the ONLY chicken that has tried to brood this year out of my 50-60 hens.

Really nice photos Rinda!

Thank you, I am so pleased with the pullets and hens I chose as keepers this year. But I have to go through and test for double blue egg genes before I can put heart and soul into them!
