Cream Legbars

but FYI, not all pullets are dark at hatch

but they should have clearly defined stripes and nice eyeliner preferably. In the UK not all of the cockerels have a dot on their head either, but they should have muted wild type coloring and be at least one to two shades lighter than their fellow pullets. From the pic you mentioned I would have guessed 1 cockerel and two pullets, but we have to remember that cameras can be deceiving too ( flash, natural lighting, angle, etc can change perspective a lot!).

Oh, good. Mine looked so much like a chipmunk when she was tiny. I thought all the females looked like that. I forgot that the UK Cream Legbar breeds have been around much longer, and may have different coloring, in addition to the camera flash, etc.

Out of my four pullets, Nugget is my favorite. She's a week younger than the other girls, but she's so inquisitive and smart (as chickens go ;) She's also proving to be a bit of a pain, in that at four weeks, she's flying- as in out of the coop if you leave the lid open. She looks so proud of herself when she does that. Her crest is growing in now, and she looks sort of goofy, as if she has perpetual bed-head. I just love her. We were only going to have three chicks, but when I saw the ad on Craigslist for a blue-egg laying chicken, I pounced. I had never heard of Cream Legbars, so I was looking for an Amerucauna. I'm so glad I ended up with my CL. She's adorable.

So my little guy has started crowing at 6-7 weeks old. Is this common in this breed for them to start crowing so early? Granted his crow sounds like someone is being killed. I was feeding them and it sounded like something was screaming in pain which panicked me. I discovered him looking very proud and then he did it again. It was definitely a "crow."

Yes, I find it is very common in mine. And your description is perfect. I always think that there is a chicken fight going on - or someone is hurt - and then it dawns on me it is 'crowing'.
congratulations, you little boy is growing up. :O)

ETA - once you recognize it - you will be surprised how young the boys Do crow!

I have a batch that is doing that too...they got through the bars of the 'play pen' the other day when I put them on grass for the first time--they are always flying up to the edge of the lid---and this batch I think is at that age when all they do is foul the water and empty the feed dish. But somehow or other they manage to still be totally endearing despite their shenanigans.

Totally agree on the early crowing. My youngest crower was a 3 week old cl cockerel! Most are closer to 12-15 weeks but when I have an early crower it is almost always a cl.
