Cream Legbars

Aloha,

I have a question. I have a half Barred Rock/half Cream Legbar and I donʻt know if itʻs a male or female. Huge comb, but so does mommy. So I was petting "her" and I guess I goosed the cloaca a bit and she gave the post sex flutter( then went under the tree and smoked a cigarette). So my question is if males ever give that flutter or is this a sure sign that itʻs a girl? I sure hope so, I love her character.

Thanks, Puhi

I don't have an answer for you but wanted to share. The only successful chick I've had hatch has been a CL x Partridge Plymouth Rock, I'm crossing my fingers for a pullet also. I'm not a huge fan of our PPR hen, I'm 99.9% sure the chick was from an egg from our grumpy hen and she lays small/medium eggs but she's hefty, but I'm thinking rocks must be a pretty strong breed on their own if the chick hatched out of my failed hatches. I didn't set out to hatch the crosses but wanted them for control eggs against our shipped eggs to make sure if there was failure during incubation I didn't just blame the shipped eggs. Needless to say, failures are either on my part or the incubator...

I'm surprised there aren't any large hatcheries that are getting in on the Cream Legbar bandwagon. Blue eggs seem popular and they are auto sexing, win/win. I do believe that I love our CL girls and boy so much because they did come from a breeder. Their personalities are super sweet, even the rooster.

My Pet Chicken, Myers Hatchery, and of course Greenfire Farms have Cream Legbars. Many smaller hatcheries are offering them too.

I was wondering, what would happen to the creme legbar if I bred to the white leghorn?
I could be wrong about this and someone correct me if I am, but wouldn't the Dominant White be very difficult to breed out in the future? Are you trying to improve egg production or what is the reason for crossing to the leghorn?

If you are just looking for a high volume blue egg layer, then that's kind of what the Arkansas Blue was created to be. The problem with the ABs is that they are hard to find right now and the eggs don't seem to ship and hatch.

I crossed my Araucana rooster on white leghorns. every chick was white. I crossed these white pullets back on araucanas 4 times the 15/16 generation of chicks is finally hatching out colored chicks.

So I am thinking brown leghorns would probably be a better choice IMO.

I didn't realize Myers carries CL's. I was under the impression that Greenfire is a smaller production but that was my assumption based on the amount they are asking per chick. I believe that My Pet Chicken is a middle man?

I think I'll stick with harassing you for more amazing birds!

Honestly, I feel guilty that one of the CL girls is my favorite over the girls I've raised for over a year from chicks but I'm starting to learn to live with the guilt.

That being said...I might check out their availability next year and get on the list early.
