Cream Legbars

Do you have photos of them before they lost their combs this winter?

Good question! That is something everyone needs to consider also when choosing a male of course it is not most important but it is up there on the list of things to consider when choosing.

For everyone - This is also a good reminder to those that are raising CL in very cold areas where frostbite is a little more common. Be sure to take lots of pre winter photos of your birds so you have the combs documented before winter possibly effects the looks of your birds. You will want to go back for reference and also have pre frostbitten pics for future customers that want to see your adult breeding stock.

Unfortunately, I don't. The ones who lost their combs had really large combs. The ones will smaller combs kept them.

ETA: They were hatched in August and didn't get their combs until the dead of Michigan winter. So, I didn't have a chance to take pre-winter photos.

Then this is something you should keep in mind for your future offspring you raise up. Take lots of pictures, often. It is very important to have photos of your birds before molt, after molt, before frostbitten combs and wattles, even at various stages of development. Not just for your own reference but also like I said for customers that are interested in obtaining good stock, they will want to see what the CL males look like with their combs to see what they might be getting in their chicks they purchase.

I do my best to take new pics every few weeks so I have it for my own records. My Rees CL are June hatches and I have tons of pre winter pics of them, his comb was not a good one, very floppy. He lost his comb over winter and looks dubbed. But I do have before and after pics.

Again this post is for everyone I think lots of pics are important, but that's just me.

Yeah. When their combs were developing, it was the dead of Michigan winter. I do wish I had pictures of them before and after. I'll remember that for future generations. I need to find a better way to take pictures of them, though. They seem to scatter when I try to take pictures and I have to corner them. Any suggestions?
My chickens always come to me when I have treats. Put out something good to eat and stand back to photograph them.

I know this one came from a legbar cause I caught her sitting lol

Love your avatar!

Many things could cause the symptoms that your are describing. Be sure to isolate that chicken from your flock and only treat (feed water etc) her last. If I had a falling chicken I would suspect Marek's - but you may want to check her carefully for any external parasites. Is the face pale - that could show anemia. You may want to post symptoms in the emergency thread.

Good luck with your pullet, I hope she will get well.
Thank you all for your help. She is still alive at the moment. If it is Marek's, wouldn't the others be sick as well? At least some of them? No one else seems sick, thank goodness. She "seems" to be a lil better, but not much. Still can't tell if she's eating but I force fed her some liquified chick feed with applesauce today. Thanks again everyone. I hope she pulls through.....

I've noticed with my older chicks that some of them have odd combs. Like my FBCM wouldn't be a good breeder because at 2 weeks the FBCM thread said not to use as a breeder because he has a carnation comb. I've noticed my super sweet BR has 3 tips at the end that are completely out of line with the rest, etc. Can you tell that with CL chicks, too? I specifically asked for clean straight combs but at a couple days old these two are not ones I don't think I would have picked out myself since they seem lop sided or crooked. The breeder said that they are fine and you can't tell this young? Can you kind of see what I mean in this pic? Tiny chicks combs are so hard to see in pics...

Can you see how this ones kind of falls to the side already?

They are cuties and I'm excited to add their beautiful eggs to my colorful basket once they start laying.

Hi IPickYupick!

Its hard to know for sure from a single photo but I will make a gut-judgement.

I do see what you are saying with the chick on the right having the back side of the comb folded over when compared to the other chick. To my eye, the comb itself is straight on midline, its just that it is folded over at the back.

Based on my experience, if he were going to have a horrible wonky comb its because his crest is large and deflects the back of the comb to one side or the other. You would see a diagonal look to the comb and it would sit off midline at the back. I don't see this in your chick. I do suspect that that chick will have a relatively larger comb than his hatchmate.

Here is an example of a large crest and comb that is pushed off midline in a chick. If you draw an imaginary straight line from his beak on back, centered between his eyes, you can see that his comb is deflecting off and almost diagonal to his right (our left). Yes he has a very crazy comb as an adult and large crest (for a Cream Legbar)

With this fellow, even though it looks like it will end up off to his right, it ended up being a wickle or S-shaped comb. It is anchored to the right of the crest and then as it grew, deflected off to his left resulting the S shape. Pretty crazy!:
