Cream Legbars

duluthralpie, I agree with what others have said. If that is the total amount of eggs a week it is low. I have four pullets and I seem to get about three eggs a day more or less. Mine started laying in late January.

I have mine all on Flock Raiser which is 20%. I switched about a month ago from a layer feed and they are all doing well on this. It is possible their protein is too high or they have some parasites. It might also be possible they are just poor layers. It doesn't seem to be the trend in the breed though.

Breeding chickens isnt an easy task is it. And CLB make it even more difficult being such a patchwork chicken to begin with.

Ill get pics of my girl from this last batch she looks very brown in the hackles to me. Only 6 weeks though so lots of changes coming.

I have a question about breeding with limited genetic material
I'm starting out and I probably wont have too many males to select from initially. (Currently have 2 and will be hatching out about 2 dozen more hand delivered eggs in May)

Right now If I only have these 2 I will need to prioritize the defects in order of magnitude

Right now Im looking at over all shape and growth rate and the one leading has these problems so far
- Looks to have slightly wry tail

The other is shorter growing slower and does not have a straight comb. Considering the issues I had with the other 3 males last year this one looks like it might have a skeletal issue like one of last years did. (Doesnt strech neck out or stand upright often) I wonder if this comes from hatching out of a smaller egg possibly

From what I have read wry tail isnt terribly difficult to breed out by comparison to other defects. I would like an opinion on how do you select between males that have obvious flaws The only thing I dont like about the first bird so far is the tail issue he is growing nicely has a straight comb so far (6 weeks) looks to have a nice long back. I know lots of things will change just wanted some opinions about what might trump what.

Hi Caychris, since no one else has responded I will give it a shot. I think if you only have limited birds to work with you go with the best of the lot based on type. I have been trying to focus on type exclusively with my birds since they need some work and have some "cosmetic" issues like combs, earlobes, color etc.

If your bird really does have a wry tail and you have something else to work with you would probably want to go with the other bird unless that bird's cumulative skeletal faults outweigh a wry tail. I think as the birds get older it will become more clear. You never know what will happen between now and then.

I know that isn't very helpful but I really think it does matter where you are starting from. I might over look a wry tail if it was the only bird I could get my hands on but if I had other options I would look into those.

If I use him it will be with females that have good tails.

Here is the girl from my hatch as she is feathering out. Still young just under 8 weeks I think (will have to check stats tonight) she looks very "brown" to me

Im getting another dozen eggs from the breeder in a couple of weeks.

My eggs under my CL broody are pipping! She came off the nest while I was in there just now and I was able to inspect the eggs I have four pipping and one cheeping loudly. She hopped right back on the nest after pooping and is making soft little noises. Crossing fingers!

so wonderful -- charge up that camera battery and take a lot of photos for us once you get a chance to see them.
