Cream Legbars

Another small hatch complete, 7 eggs went into lockdown and 4 hatched. ALL 4 chicks that hatched were MALE. Im up to 12 male CL chicks to evaluate this year and 8 females chicks.

Congrats on the hatch! That is a lot of boys. Just think of the selection you will have

Noooo. Is that set in stone? What are definitive signs of a female, i may be able to swap it. But the breeder thought it was a hen due to the eye lines...

I did have one pullet that feathered in like that; very similar feather color and pattern. I was convinced she was a boy because she was so gray, lucky for me she wasn't as she has been one of my best foundation hens. For some reason she almost always produces pullets (like 9 out of 10) !

A pullet should have distinctive down chipmunk stripes as well as eye-liner before they feather in.

…I finally caught up with the thread and find you no longer have them...

Thankyou everyone, im getting a picture of the last chick left with the breeder, apparently alot darker with a tuft on head. Ill post when i get it to run it by you all, thankyou again.

Ive never kept cockerals, at what age will they no longer live together okay?

My oldest CL rooster has always been pretty tolerant of other males mixed in with the flock. If the cockerels have good manners and don't chase the hens (causing a disturbance), he lets them run around, mate, eat and sleep together. He is most tolerant of other CL cockerels. In general, my CL cockerels seem like they can be housed together (away from pullets) better than most of my other breeds.

I suppose it is just a male thing. I have had males for a few years and have heard it every once in a while, but this Spring, OH BOY, its something else. I live in close proximity to quite a few houses so while it doesn't bother me completely. When I think of my neighbors that's when I get flustered myself because I am sure they can hear it. I never wanted to be "THAT" neighbor, and I really hope Im not. But I think It might be time to cut back on the amount of males I have, that might help.

I just "rehomed" 4 older cockerels this week, and what a difference it made in the noise level, I felt so much relief.
But that's like trying to dig sand out of a hole, it just keeps filling in...

This is what one of our Cream Legbars gave us.  It is huge!  2.5oz (73 gm).  It's next to one that is more typical of what we get from them.  Candled it width: 350px; height: 263px">

That is enormous!
I wonder if @Phage is still working on her double yolker project?

Yes! I have a huge egg from a friend with 2 babies growing in it, and got one from the Rees girls yesterday :D

Ya gotta like that sand analogy -- perhaps that is the underlying secret of chicken math. -- LOL -- wow, I also agree that flock dynamics can be changed by just subtracting certain individuals and it makes a big difference. It really is something that can be felt. Glad you are caught up.
