Cream Legbars

Calling ALL - Cold Climate Cream Legbar Owners --

please HELP me answer a question that came into the Cream Legbar Club's 'contact us' section on the website...

Please help describe the cold tolerance of the CLs and also your location - and maybe your wintering set up -- like barn, coop, big coop tiny coop - etc. to help the questioner evaluate how appropriate the CL would be for their neeeds.

Thanks to all y'all.

Blooms on Magnolia Tree-- so what's more Southern than a Magnolia Tree? A Magnolia tree with a Mocking Bird in it........

I live in NH also. My Cream Legbar boys did not fare badly this winter. I had 9 in a 4 x 8 coop with 2 Marans roosters, so 11 in there, all roosters. I still cannot believe it worked as long as it did. My CLs did just fine. I have had them since 2011 in October so this was my 3rd winter with them. I'd say they do no better or worse than any other breed with a large comb. There comb seems sometime oversized on some birds. Frostbite? I think it has to do with the weather if it's dry or wet (we had some very cold winds, early winter was nice dry light snow, late winter very wet), the coop, it's ventilation, size and number of birds in there and maybe even where the bird chooses to sit at night. My BCM Marans rooster had the worse frostbite and lost the tippy tops of his tips on his comb. I think the youngest may have also but negligible and maybe my oldest boy but they got a few spots here and there and that may also be due to having all those boys cooped up together. My first rooster lost tips in 2011 from frostbite while my 2 Marans boys had the black tips but pulled through okay. In 2012 no loss of anything on any combs. This winter my BCM boy was the worst for the wear.I find the Legbar to be hardy as needed.

I live in NY and my Cream Legbar roo did great this year no frostbite at all :)

BUT we had some crazy polar vortex with 5 degree temps for about a week that we never have- on those nights I brought him in to an unheated basement at night just in case. I did this about 5 -6 times total throughout the winter. The girls stayed in the coop and did just fine.

The year before was a normal winter and my Cream Legbars stayed in the coop every night and made it through without any frostbite what so ever.

A typical NY winter

ooh, brrrr

How's this unrelated girl?

She looks nice. Her crest is small but if she has one she has at least one gene so you can work with that. Her color looks nice with very little melanizers around the neck and face area. Good type in regards to tail and wing angle. Good yellow legs. Her breast is salmon. I'd keep growing her out. She looks like she will turn out well. She looks young so not expecting to see much of a comb and no reason to assume it's a pea comb.

Aloha,

I would appreciate any comments on these young guys. Thanks. Hard to get pictures though. I have two. One is bigger. Not sure if I'm showing both. I was just snapping away.

On my screen he looks like he may have some chestnut spotting on the body but that may not be so in person. His barring does not look as precise as the other. But he has a nice crest. Cannot speak to his comb. The other one looks 'nicer' so far but they are still way too young.

They look really nice so far but as you know way too young for some traits to be really defined.

Your little ones are looking good BP! I hope your pullet keeps that round breast line, and hopefully your cockerels will develop the same fleshy shapes. Best wishes with your birds, please let us know how they continue to grow!

I drove down to NH to get them...I haven't seen many breeders up here in Maine.

Does anyone know of any? It's would be nice to have a connection close by.
