Cream Legbars

My only CL chick is still in the hatcher he/she is not fluffing out at all. We put olive oil on her when she was too dry and it saved her life, but has caused her (or could be him) to stay matted down to her body. The other two CL eggs appear to be dead.

Hatch day was yesterday, the CL was hatched on Friday and she was my last hatch. I am going to give the CL a bath with soap and water, and put her back in the incubator. Hopefully that will help her fluff out. Otherwise she is a bald chicken.

After she dries and fluffs (fingers crossed) she moves to the brooder so I can clean the hatcher before my next hatch.

Here are before pictures of Her or him..

I gave it a bath and hopefully it will fluff out, I think it is a girl, but not sure.
Keep it warm and make sure the bath is warm -- dry really well -- The fluff helps hold in body heat - as you know and wit the olive oil slicked down -- chick has nothing to hold the heat.... warmth will be crucial for health of the chick (which I'm sure you know better than I - and that is why you are going to wash it....!) - don't let it get chilled (LOL _ don't I sound like a mother-hen)
Congratulations on getting one --

Thanks,,,

Yep I used warm about 115 degree water and only had her out of the incubator ( hatcher) a few minutes. I put her back in it, She is alone in it with some unhatched eggs. The humidity is quite low so she should dry out and warm up fast.

My hatch is progressing, out of 36 CL eggs in lockdown I have 9 babies (looks like so far 3 males and 6 females), 2 currently zipping, 4 pips and still waiting on the others. Today is a good day for chicks!!!

HAPPY EASTER !!!

Huh!? Odd.

Do you have pics of the parent stock? Any possibilities of an accidental mating? Or possibilities of mixing up the CL with another hens egg that is the same color?

I know that there are white sports from the barring gene in other breeds and there are recessive white chicks that happen in this line I think there may be some combo of recessive genes in your at least one pairing (if not for the above mentioned accidental pairing). The genetic makeup of these birds are pretty diverse after all you never really know whats hiding under the covers.

x2! I would love to see how their color turns out as they mature!
Since I haven't been able to find any takers on these boys I may have them around long enough to see how he turns out. If so, I will post some pictures..

Quote: I have started hatching in egg trays and have been pleased with the results.

I woke up to 5 pipped Jill Rees Cream Legbar eggs! I set 40 eggs. I'm anxious to see how many have hatched by the time I get home after work! Exciting!!!

Here are some pictures of most of the chicks. There are still a few slow ones left out of the picture. I've noyiced significantly less color variation simply by only keeping my best rooster in the pen with the ladies. There's a second rooster I like who will be my back up. The last 2 are looking for new homes. Lol!
