Cream Legbars

I have been involved in my 3rd hatch of the spring and I have one little pullet that just hatched and appears to have a vaulted skull.

There are some vaulted skulls -- and it seems that those get extra large crests. I could look it up -- I think that vaulted skulls sometimes don't close the bones -- or don't close quickly -- however all the CL chicks that I have seen that have this -- seem to "grow out of it" quickly and appear perfectly normal. Some of the eggs I once sent to Junibutt resulted in a vaulted skull chick -- I think subsequently that chick went to CT for a 4H project -- and that looking at the grown out pullet -- there was no way you could know vaulted..... if memory serves. So somewhere in the genetics of my flock there was a little vault going on.....

Some googling:

How cool is that - the writer thinks that vaulted skull is a sex-linked recessive.....

Vaulted skull chick is still alive, but she sleeps a lot. I'm going to give her some sugar water/electrolytes when I get home from work for now I have left her in the hatcher, since she hatched yesterday.

What a lot of growth in just that time -- he must be putting a lot of energy into that crest..... also shows that whitish eye-ring that I see often in males. Cute chick.

THIS IS THE BARE BONES OF A SILKIE'S "VAULTED" SKULL SHOWING HOW THE TOP SKULL BONES HAVE AN AREA WHERE THE BRAIN IS NOT ENCLOSED AND IS VULNERABLE RIGHT UNDER THE HEAD SKIN SO I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IS WHAT YOUR CHICK HAS. SHE PROBABLY JUST HAS A LOT OF FLUFFY ON HER LITTLE HEAD!
