Cream Legbars

I have a question for you Cream Legbar lovers.....

I have been looking at mine. it was brought up recently somewhere else about the color of the crests on the girls and the beak color.

Do you think the crest should match another part of the bird, hackles, saddle feathers, under belly or what?

Do you think a dark crest should be allowed (almost black)..? Or a lighter crest?

I have been looking at mine since this was brought up, not the show girls but all of mine to see what I think. To be honest, I just can't decide which look I like better...

Also What do you think about the beak color? If it goes to a "bone" color should that be allowed?

On that one I have an opinion!!! (SURPRISE---SURPRISE---SURPRISE)..... I think the yellow should be the preferred and the SOP, not the bone. I have one with the bone color in it and it just is not as good looking to me as the yellow.

Just wondering what others think,,,Thanks

I could go either way with the crests. Whatever is dictated I can deal with. But I agree that yellow beaks are something I like. It matches the feet, I guess.

Do you think the crest should match another part of the bird, hackles, saddle feathers, under belly or what?

1) The crest on the the Hen is described as Cream & Grey with some chestnut permissible (if I am remembering correctly). To me that means that the crest should match the hackles since they are listed as cream and grey (if I remember correctly).

Do you think a dark crest should be allowed (almost black)..? Or a lighter crest?

2) I can accept the slate colored crest as a dark interpretation of grey, but if there is not cream to go with the slate color then it does not meet the description. The key here is to get cream on the crest. If the Cream is there then everything else falls into place. If the cream is not there...well it isn't there and so it doesn't meet the SOP. That should NOT be a DQ or a major color defect. It is something minor but if you are trying to win Best of Breed you have to work on getting everything right. If you don't someone else will and you may go home empty handed because of a 1/2 point deduction on your bird. Small things make all the difference when you have a few dozen birds that all are the best of their flock.

I have been looking at mine since this was brought up, not the show girls but all of mine to see what I think. To be honest, I just can't decide which look I like better...

3) My wife likes the dark slate crest better. It make the hens look like they are wearing a french baret. Very Chic. I like the cream crest better. I give a uniform color to the bird. Of course I like solid colored Goats too and my wife like the moon spotted and tri color so I am just drawn to even colored animals. They look better to me. A mix of colors reminds me of mixed breeds and crosses.

Also What do you think about the beak color? If it goes to a "bone" color should that be allowed?

4) My hatchery Light Brown Leghorns all had the horn colored beaks (i.e. yellow with the black streaks through them). I again feel that the the solid beak color (i.e. solid yellow) looks better. The horn color take not talent to achieve. Mixed breed and crosses come out with horn colored beaks. A solid yellow beak on the other hand only comes from a well breed line and is the mark of some dedicated work over many many generations. Having said that I find that most of my breeding cocks have yellow beaks while most of the hens I breed have horn beaks. So my line is not to where I want it to me yet.

On that one I have an opinion!!! (SURPRISE---SURPRISE---SURPRISE)..... I think the yellow should be the preferred and the SOP, not the bone. I have one with the bone color in it and it just is not as good looking to me as the yellow.

According to the standard the hackles are cream with some grey barring, beak: yellow, and the crest should be cream and grey, some chestnut permissible.
